1934 Thermostats repro, original, reliable?

Checking the thermostats housed in the upper hoses on my 221 cu. in. '34.

They appear to be in good shape and begin to open at 160° and are full open at 190°.

I am not familiar with this type of thermostat. They appear to be original.
Keep or replace with newer type?

I vote keep
designed for the in hose location and larger open area when open
I have a similar style in my model A and don’t have any problems like some do with modern design like having to drill holes to make the modern ones work—I look for them at flea markets

Thanks Kurt in NJ for voting to keep. I am going to vote to keep as well. And will go back in when I reinstall the engine. They still appear to work fine.

I had never seen a bellows actuated thermostat before. I am assuming that the bellows are filled with a gas and my concern is the gas could degrade or slowly escape over time reducing their effectiveness.

Not filled with anything. No worries Do a search on Ebay:vintage Ford thermostats and you will see a multitude of bellow style thermostats listed just on the first page.

I don't understand what those clips on the side are for.

I would think that when you tighten the clamps on the hose, the "ripples" in them give the hose something to "grab" on to. Actually, it seems like a good idea.

in my 33 and 34, I tig welded a modern t/stat onto a short length of SS tube.and just pushed it into the top hose, they have been in for years.

Thanks all for the replies. If I ever have to replace these with the modern type, I will go with Lawries solution below.

Here is how the thermostats are located. The fingers slide on to the outside of the radiator inlet. A hose clamp above to secure the upper hose. There was only one clamp on the hose above and none over the fingers.

Probably wouldn't hurt to place a clamp on the hose over the fingers to ensure it stays in place.

Well, I was wrong again. That's what I get for wandering out of my area of expertise. That's actually pretty slick!
