Brake Fade is Real!

Most of the replacement brake drums are technically not legal in New Jersey because they do not have the maximum oversize stamped on them.
Also it is not legal to turn a model A brake drum because if the oversize is not stamped on the drum the law reverts to manufacturer specifications and in the service bulletins it say “never turn drum”

Couldn’t you just stamp it yourself?
 
Each state has different laws .
I was curious and read through a lot of state motor vehicle laws— it interesting
one state it is a crime to just offer a oversized drum for sale
Another says it’s ok if the drum is cracked if you put a band around it!
Some just say .060 oversized limit . — but there are drums marked for larger sizes.
Of course you could stamp numbers on them — but as is with anything you stamp numbers on it doesn’t matter until there is a issue

Don't feel special about that. We have the same issue. Clueless legislators acting on information from equaly clueless advisers. SOOO many times, rules are made for far more modern cars but worded with no exemptions for cars of the age of ours so we get caught up in it. Then, there are the vehicle testers who also have no idea. I have a friend who drives a late 20's Dodge with its external, contracting brakes. With those, as the drum heats up and expands, the pedal comes up, the opposite of internal shoes. That means the brakes are adjusted so they start working when the pedal is close to the floor. He had an examiner refuse to pass the car because the pedal was too low. My friend tried to explain but it was beyond his ability to comprehend. In the end, friend said "OK, adjust them and take it for a drive - I bet you don't get back." He didn't! Once the drums were hot enough, the brakes were on and could not be released until they cooled. The car passed, the tester failed, IMO.

September UPDATE: She is in good hands with Mr. Randy Gross now. Removed everything on all four wheels and shipped them back West for cast iron drums and refurbishing.

Also found that my youngest son Aaron is showing some interest on learning more about Henry's Lady!

Kudos for you regarding finding a competent vendor to make your braking system safe for passengers such as yourself and Aaron.

I agree. I live in the SF Bay Area but was in SoCal over a Thanksgiving weekend. By prior arrangement I stopped by his shop on Saturday of the weekend and he and his crew were busy at work. Really gracious and a joy to talk to. I dropped off my backing plates and hubs for a complete rebuild with cast drums and had them in my hands shipped to NorCal two weeks later. He’s one of the small vendors that makes this hobby great!

BTW, his “shop” is the garage of his Mom’s house. She still does the admin side of the business that Randy took over from his dad Mel.
