Has anyone tried replacing the 80 lb. oil pressure sending unit on a 1946-1948 Ford? They don't seem particularly easy to access. Any tricks or techniques I should know? Thank you in advance.

Michael Driskell at ThirdgenAuto sell a special socket for this task. I have not used it personally.

i was very, very disappointed at what looked like an impossible task, short of removing the engine or transmission, when i decided i needed to replace the oil pressure sending unit on my '41, but was shocked when i could turn it out by hand!

after buying a new one, i was not about to actually screw it in tightly without attempting to find some way of easily removing it again....when i ran across one of these extensions. i highly recommend purchasing one. if appropriate for you car.

I recently had to replace mine on a ‘46 Mercury. Had to remove the floorboard to get at it. It was not an easy job, but only took 90 min or so.

Get an angle head wrench if you have any friends that are aircraft mechanics borrow one from them.

I ended up buying a Snap-On S-8659 tool designed specifically for that job. Hopefully it makes the job easier. I tested the wire from the sender by attaching it to a ground and the gauge responded, so I'm fairly confident the old sender was the problem.

That's a great idea! I wonder why didn't Ford have something like that initially? I can'e believe the extra length changes the pressure reading. I might just get myself one of those. Thank you.

I have two 9/16" open end Craftsman wrenches heated and bent, one to the and one to the right just for that job on my 41 pickup. it's a hard place to access otherwise. Tim
