Source for 11” front drums(48-52 F1?)

I have these self energizing front brakes that I would like to use on my 35 coupe. I believe they are from a 48-52 F1. They use an 11 inch drum, anyone have a source for the drums? Or better yet a part number that I might be able to cross to a local parts store?
I will ask on the H.A.M.B. as well.

If you have '48-'52 F-1 hubs; get '80 Bronco REAR drums.

Be sure to ID the hubs as F-1 hubs and drums have been interchanged with F-100 hubs and drums over the years.

Interesting. I didn't know this. Should pick up a pair for my dad's '49 F1

Nice! I’ll have to look through my parts to see if I have the hubs. I found these while moving out the woody. My parts tent is getting a bit full. I think my front axle has already been upgraded with later spindles(37 ) and hydraulic brakes. But if not I have extras. I may go with 46-48 front spindles because I don’t think you have to chamfer the inner bearing when using those.

All Ford spindles have a radius on where the inner bearing fits on the spindle.

So basically the 14116 inner bearing used in the F-1/F-100 brake swap should have the inner edge beveled to seat full on the spindle.

Not a big deal to bevel it; quick with good carbide burr and a little slower with a stone burr.

If you find the spindles and need help determining if they are F-1 or F-100 let me know and I will add some ID info to this thread.

Thanks Pete and Rich! I’ll start hunting for those hubs. I read over on the H.A.M.B. that if I use the round 37-41 spindles they will have to be ground on top for wheel cylinder clearance.
Are the brake shoes/springs/adjuster/wheel cyl available in parts stores, or only early ford parts dealers?

'37-'41 round-back spindle need a little bit of grinding on the upper rear edge to clear the wheel cylinder; easy. The gray spindle was done with a little more finesse than the "notch" in the assembled picture.

Parts are readily available. List of what I use.
Wagner Z10DR riveted shoes
Raybestos WC9090 wheel cylinder
Raybestos WC9091 wheel cylinder
Raybestos H1414-2 wheel cylinder pushpins*
Raybestos H4020HD hold downs*
Raybestos H1500 adjuster*
NAPA UP80304 retract springs
NAPA UP80503 adjuster springs
Help (Dorman) 13896 shoe retainer

* Carlson, BrakeBest, and others use the same numbers.

If all else fails; just look up parts for a '60 F-100; same stuff.

I think the F1 front drums are being reproduced if I'm not mistaken. They aren't cheap but they are out there.

Besides being 3 or 4 times the price, they are a full cast iron drum and nothing like an accurate reproduction of an actual Ford F-1 drum.

Maybe these are better; but the ones I saw in the past were poor quality and the casting was machined off center and way out of balance.

Rich, if you can add details to differentiate between a F1 vs F100 spindle would be helpful.

The offset on the hub is different. And of course the drums have to suit the hubs. F100 has a wider track width.

Hubs have different offsets and center register diameter. F-1 hubs will space the wheel out a little further per side as compared to F-100 hubs. Pictures show numbers close enough to tell them apart.

Spindles are different between F-1 & F-100 too.

Great guys, thanks and sorry for hijacking the post. Last question, any good way to distinguish the f1 vs f100 spindles, I assume length of the tapered cone?

F-1 spindles have the same kingpin diameter .812 and inclination as '48 & earlier Ford car and pick-up spindles. The L/H spindle has a bolt thru steering arm; while the R/H spindle has an integral arm with one eye for the tie rod.

F-100 spindles have a larger kingpin .857 and different inclination than F-1 & earlier spindles. Both spindles have bolt on arms and are the same.

From the flange (same bolt pattern) outward the snouts are identical.

Backing plates are the same from '48-'56. Most stamped Bendix some later ones have Ford script & KH part number.

Re: Source for 11” front drums(48-52 F1?)

I use F-100 front brakes on my avatar with a self energizing kit from mid 60s Ford trucks. This was an "upgrade" to the early stock front Ford brakes. I do not use the esrly Fird brakes - better braking with the F-100 and better parts availability. The rear in my avatar is a Hot Rod Works setup that uses the mid 60s ford truck rear brakes. Although quality my be suspect, Soeedway sells a kit with all you need. The outer bearing is the original Ford unit and I clean them up real well and reuse them. I treveby believe thatvthe bearings are of a much better quality than todays. You can PM me with part numbers for the inner bearing and seal if you'd like. The only modification to the front F-100 self adjusters is to cut some clearance on the inner square grease retainer. Drums are still available from the 60s ....

The original Fird brakes were fine for local drives but not for long distance and 75 mph which is what I do.
