Brent..
Steve told us they flip over for use on right.
What’s going with us is use on slant. Steve said only need to ream for larger hinge pins which we’ve not done yet. He’s had them used on Vic
Oldbluoval - I modified one of these to fit the right side of my ‘31 slant by drilling the holes out. You need to be very careful as the metal gets really thin if you use the old holes to center on. To deal with that, I put the bracket in the vise on my vertical mill and cheated the center of the new hole towards the inside. The outside of the new hole was the outside of the old hole.
The new long pin I got from Snyders (
A-46335–B, special for the slant windshields) had a knurled portion just under the head. I ended up drilling out both top and bottom to fit the pin diameter, then overdrilling just the top to account for the knurled portion. In the original steel hinges you are supposed to hammer that knurling into the steel to hold it in place, but I did not want to do that to the pot metal hinge. I put a spot of loctite under the head. The hinge pins are long so you could thread the lower end and put a nut on.
BTW - Snyder’s sells a hinge mirror
A-17741-B* for the 30/31s. This does NOT fit the slants (initial expensive mistake) and cannot, as near as I can see, be modified to do so. Instead I used the
A-17741-A (Note: when I did this a couple of years ago they designated this mirror for 28-29 only, I see now that this is designated for 28-31 but not Slants).
But wait - there's more! When I went to remove the old hinge pin using the handy-dandy Snyders hinge pin removal tool
A-46335-T that I borrowed, I ran into an issue. The hole in the top bar of the tool, into which the head of the hinge pin moves when pressing it out, was too small. Rather than to drill out the top bar in a borrowed tool, I made a couple of new bars from 1"x1" square stock I had. Also, the hinge pins in the "normal" cars uses a 7/32" dowel in the lower portion of the tool to press out the pin. I made my special Slant Windshield tool to use a slightly larger 1/4" dowel.
So now I'm set! But no more Slants to do this on...
