Axle Housing Repair Sleeve

I was fortunate to buy a pair of C&G sleeves from a member here and then a couple of years ago had my Columbia side housing repaired by John Stooksbury in Knoxville. I had also talked to John Connelly about doing it. His charge was reasonable but I chose Stocksbury to keep shipping costs lower. He did a great job on thee repair.

Here’s an alternative method and something that I have done. It works just fine. I have shown a picture of a Timken race which has the correct OD dimensions. The only problem is they are not wide enough to cover the entire length needed. Therefore, you must use two of them… but two are too long. That makes having a professional install them that much more important. If you care about where the part line is or want it in the middle of the bearing surface, you can have them machined but you must be careful not to overheat them and jeopardize the Rockwell hardness. Since I used a crankshaft grinder to do all of the machine work, I only surfaced one of the installed races. I haven’t checked lately, but I would guess the Timken number is still available.

Depends on what brand ...... chinese are obviously the cheapest as in $& quality.....,
The ones we've supplied weren't expensive actually they're LESS expensive compared to the original as you DON'T need/require/use a sleeve as the bearing has a inner ring (sleeve) pressed into it it's a heavy duty machined NU type needle roller bearing .....

The bearings I was talkin about were German, metric, expensive as heck, and yes you need 2 per side

Do you know the brand and associated part numbers for what the bearings you've mentioned? I'd like to check it out and see how this compares to a total axle conversion.

Couple of thoughts:

1) Contact C&S asking for interest in a new run with xx buyers providing a down payment.
The xx buyers from here and the HAMB

2) Treat it like a large truck crankshaft journal repair and likely expensive:
- Weld the bearing surface using SAW using 70 low hydrogen series wire.
- Grind the deposited weld to size
- Post weld heat treat the housing

Dale, there is an old thread here with the bearing numbers, I think it was Lawrie from down under who did it....maybe

Gentlemen,

You are 100% correct and my error. I misread the "0" as a "9". Thank you for picking up my error.

Tim

Diameters are too small.
The OD must be 2.0625 or 2-1/16" and not 1.5".

Sorry for the "echo". I replied before refreshing the browser and didn't see the late last night post by John.

Haha. No problem. Yep. My old eyes misread the "9" as a "0". Good news is IR-2916 are also available from many sources.
