OT: Expedition to the Outback 1927

Almost 100 years on and different vehicles but my wife and I have seen plenty of that country on our outback trips in our Model A. That's where I feel at home.
BTW, if you guys from the northern hemisphere think you have lots of stars in the sky, you "aint seen nuttin". Here's why. Earth is towards the outer edge of our galaxy (the milky way) and our solar system is tilted almost at right angles to the galaxy. As it happens, the southern hemisphere faces towards the center of the galaxy and the north, away from it so we see all of the galaxy while you guys only see what is further out than our solar system is.
We have had American and Canadian friends come over here to do some touring and I have always told them to at night, find a place away from a town so that there is no light pollution and lay on their backs and look up. Awe inspiring does not even go close.
Thanks for the links, Glynn.

For those that watch Outback Truckers, here is an episode from the same area.
Now, the reason I post this is that Joanna's father owns Drysdale River Station.
So she is outback royalty.
The station is about the most northerly for fuel, and during the dry season they have a mechanic.
When we were there, nearly 20 years ago, a whole bunch of people were waiting for a week for spares to be flown up from Perth. The truck driver from next door, so to speak, picking them up from the plane had disappeared for a few days. It wasn't known if he was at the pub.
There were many vehicles with broken shocks, broken springs, wheels with elongated holes etc.
Joanna, young at the time, ran the bar they had there. There was a telephone in a fridge to keep the dust out, being a fairly recent device.

After watching that, I want to get out of here and head north. It's raining and cold but the fuel situation means it won't happen this year.

This just came up on facebook.

Two grader road trains, I guess you could call them. Complete with accommodation, water and a spare car going out to fix the roads for the Finke River desert race.
There has been much rain in the region.

From the Pink Roadhouse in the (somewhat) central Australian outback town of Oodnadatta.
My father would talk of seeing camel trains going off from Oodnadatta into the sand hills to stations (farms with no roads) during travels in WW2.

Also, a couple of 1920's Studebakers were passing thru on the way to Darwin reenacting a trip 100 years ago.
Before the war, the road to Darwin was a track from water hole to water hole.

Don't tell me the media has blown things out of proportion again!! Did you feel the sarcasm?

Update:
>>Two grader road trains, I guess you could call them.

Chris Hemsworth, the actor (Thor), has a filming company and is going make a film about the Finke Desert Race which will be distributed worldwide.
You heard it here first on the barn.

>>Also, a couple of 1920's Studebakers were passing thru on the way to Darwin

It seems that the 1926 trip was to be the start of a regular service from Adelaide to Darwin.

They used sand mats, like the original trip. Apparently, they work well as the rear wheels drag the mat under the front wheels which make them turn, somewhat like 4wd.
