31 Deluxe Roadster Windshield Question

Hi all.

Question on the windshield pivot assembly. I have a wing nut that is frozen to the stud - if I try to remove it the stud unscrews - what is happening that I cannot see? Any thoughts on how to remove?

I researched a couple of threads on this but am still a bit unsure of how that works. Is best course of action to remove windshield and cut the stud? I need to remove the windshield at some point anyway to replace the rubber weatherstripping but right now just wondering how that assembly works and if stud unscrewing or traveling out disturbs how it works on windshieldside if that makes sense.

Thanks, Steve

The stud is swedged in the lower stanchion and it’s turning
I’d guess you’ll have to disassemble the entire windshield assembly by removing the substanchions. Then attempt to get the stud stabilized from the back side.
Might can be done in place by tilting out the windshield??
Gonna be trial and error…..I mean try again.

I imagine that you are talking about the lower windshield pivot stud. This stud originates in the lower stanchion. I would suggest that you just go ahead and remove the wing nut along with the stud. Once you have the stud/wing nut out, work on separating the two. If the stud is in good shape you can reinsert it into the lower stanchion with some permanent Loctite. If the stud is damaged you can replace it with 3/8-24 threaded rod. If you replace the stud, pay attention to the length of he new stud extending from the lower stanchion. Make sure that it matches the other side so that the wing nut will tighten up sufficiently.

Hello, I think the stud has flats on it , I will try to look at mine tomorrow, the repro wingnuts often bottom out and jam on stud and don’t hold windshield tight enough. Not sure if a set of needle nose vise grips can fit , will check it out tomorrow.

You will have to take the stanchion off and pull the stud. the stud should have a nut made unto it that will hold the cone to the windshield frame. If the stud if turning out of the windshield frame and the wing nut is froze to the stud, it will come out still in the stanchion and the cone will be loose from the frame. Try gripping the stud in the stanchion to remove the wing nut. If you are successful, you could possibly use the stud over, or replace it. The windshield should balance on the car with one stanchion removed.

Thanks guys! Gdmn852, I can get my small vice grip on the thread but will need them really tight - do those threads thread into anything ? Prior owner had wingnut cranked on without any washer so yeah, it's bottomed out as you suggest.

Appreciate all the help!

Steve

Right - so it threads into the cone area, has a stop or shoulder in the stud and then the windshield frame itself, right? Oh, I think I see now that is how the cone is held in place. Makes perfect sense but also tells me I cannot go nuts and really crank vice grips onto the threaded area too hard and ruin the threads. I now know it fits but without a lot of force the stud just spins (of course!)

Another thought I has was to bust the ears off and use a nut cracker on the wing nut, or just cut the stud and replace it but was hoping for a quick fix. Windshield prob wants to come off the more I think about it.

This is what you are dealing with.

Gdmn852, Fordbarners in general are helpful!! Thanks all who took some time to respond!

Getting more active again now that we acquired our second roadster/3rd A - always my first go to with Ford questions.

I may just wait till I remove the windshield at this point - a good motivator to keep the windshield in place at higher speeds!

Steve

Thanks Bob. Assuming shorter part is what goes into the windshield. Then the nut holding cone on and then the wing nut.

Here's a catalog picture shown as 1928-29 parts - pretty sure that all the pivot parts are the same for all Model A years. If your present parts are original and usable that can be the best way to go. Reproduction cones can have cup shape problems which can result in lack of holding windshield in place problem. Often the reproduction Studs are too long and the Wing Nuts can bottom out also preventing the nuts from tightening enough to hold the windshield in place. Good luck with your project.

Hello again, with spring coming, you will want the roadster drivable, we have had 2 days above freezing here in north western Pennsylvania, and getting excited to get mine out. I bought mine a little too hasty, wife said I saw the top go down and my wallet came out!
