It is probably a simple method but I have removed the steering unit from my 39 Ford but I cannot seem to figure our how to removed the collar which bolts to the bottom of the dash. There seems to be a pin or something holding the collar to the mask like a pin. I tried tapping it but I do not want to ruin the collar. can someone who has done this let me know what the best procedure to do this many thanks Tom

Collar? Do you mean the ignition drop housing? If so, there is a bolt at the bottom that squeezes the drop over the column. Remove that bolt. Push (tap) a thin wedge into the open "slot" of the drop.
The ignition switch must be in the "on" position.
At this point, it may take a little tap, but it will slide off.

It has a bolt with the head twisted off at the factory. Center drill it and it can be removed with a EZ out.

Here is what the column lock pin looks like. Like everyone says: you have to remove the bolt holding the column assembly tight to the column tube. Mine was so rusted that I had to weld a nut to it to remove it.
