Sparplug wires late 40’s race

About details.
If one build a real racy ( but for streets ) coupe in a late 40’s style what wires and hat was common back then ?
I will run Kong distributor and dual mallory 6 V spools.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

Packard 440 wire and angled Rajah plug ends. Both are available from The Brillman Company. If you don't like lettering on the Packard wire, you can remove it with lacquer thinner.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

I second the Packard 440 wires. I used to buy old spools of it at swap meets. That was the best wire maid. It's has gotten expansive, there some for sale on eBay. I have one set of Rajah tips out in the garage, and they were on a car I bought 40-years ago. The tips I have say "Rajah" cast into the plastic. The new repro ones do not say Rajah on them. I have seen older originals in the Rajah boxes, and they did not say Rajah on them. I'm not sure what the deal is on them. If you can find the ones that are marked Rajah, I'd use those ones.

And please, no transparent red plastic wire. I will admit that I once thought it was cool, but I then entered the eighth grade.

I had those transparent red wires on my first flathead. Once I really got into the history of flatheads, I switched trying to make everything period correct. No red wires, no bolts with grade 5 or 8 markings, everything just like it would have been in the era of the car I was building. It really does make a difference if your try to recreate an era. I know I appreciate looking at cars with all their original stuff or hot rods looking like they were built in the 40s and 50s.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

I had a friend who had the red wires on his street rod, at night you could see the wires arc through to the valve covers, he changed them shortly after that.

Brillman & Noble Speed also sell lacquered cotton covered wire that is 100% correct for 40's stuff.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

I recently bought an old Mallory that still has those translucent red plug wires on it. It even has the boots to match.

Rick Noble has a good selection of vintage style plug wires as well https://www.noblespeedequipment.com/category/ignition-wire-componets

Do you have any books with pictures about pre and just post-war racing? Seems like it would answer a lot of what you are looking to accomplish once you see historical photos of cars that were around at the time. There are plenty out there.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

No I has no books, I never had books in anything, I guess I had no money so I’m self learn or ask people. But pictures is nice.
Wish more was copy to internet, but hard to find but sometines here or at Hamb.
But as here now at forum, now I learned a new thing !
I don’t know if a book can explain rubber both or Rajah.
I’m very humble get help but I pay back to people ask me ( what I can.
I once borrowed a book ’merchants of speed’, love it.

Re: Sparplug wires late 40’s race

Hank, are you asking about rubber boots to go over the plug connectors? I don't know myself what was available for use in the 40's, but I would think the Rajah caps might be more period correct. Molded rubber products weren't as common then. Will your wires be inside the original style metal looms or tubes.

I have those as well. They are called Sealtights. I have some in the box and they are definitely 40's-era vintage. The made them for both ends of the wire.

I'll see if I can find some pictures of ignition wires in my books.
