What is this "vise"?

This "thing" is in an estate sale near me that starts tomorrow (Thursday; 2/5/26). I'm wondering if I should go try to buy it. I've never seen anything like it.

I'll hijack my own thread:

I've "restored" several vises. By restore I mean disassembled, sandblasted, painted, and put back together. Not knowing what color they were originally I just painted them "resale red" Rustoleum 7162 Sunrise Red. Most I've given away (to relatives). Here's one that I bought a number of years ago. When my grandson was about 10-12 he wanted to work on it. I let him do it all; take apart, sandblast, and paint. He picked the color. Being as he lives 2 hours away he didn't have time to wait for the paint to dry so I reassembled it. Personally I wouldn't have chosen the gray but what the heck; I told him to choose and I'm not going to change it. He's a senior in HS now but when he gets old enough to have his own shop I'll give it to him.

And a couple I kept and use:

I got it!

I paid twice what I wanted to but half of what I figured it would be priced at.

I bought it strictly as a conversation/display piece. It will NEVER get used in my shop or house. Some pieces ae missing and yes, one piece s broken. Doesn't affect my purpose or desire one iota. Watch the video in response 3 and you'll see a lot more information.

Now I'm torn between leaving it alone "as-is" or welding the one piece, sandblasting the whole shebang, and painting it. Any thoughts?

Note: as it's only a display piece and I'll never try to sell it as an antique I don't think it will bother me to ruin the patina by cleaning/welding/painting. If I do that I'll have to fabricate a wooden handle for the drill press as it's obviously missing.

None-the-less; I'm still interested in your opinions.

That's one of those things I would try to find out what color it came with and fix it up and paint it. I enjoy seeing old tools(especially odd balls) fixed up to look like new!

I have seen the old ad's for these "multi- tools" .. its a vice, its a bender , its a stretched and best of all, that crank handle was meant to drive a twist drill while advancing the feed using the vice screw. Just the tool for the fix - it all - farmer.
A great find with all the attachments. Clean it up and play.

If you're not a professional welder, I'd suggest you get one to do the welding for you.

By no means am I a "good" welder. You've heard the old expression "just because you have a welder doesn't mean you ARE a welder." That's me. As Clint Eastwood said "a man's gotta know his limitations." Well, I do. I know that I can weld up a bracket to hang a tool on the shop wall and it'll work. If I need something welded that absolutely HAS to remain stuck together I have someone else do it. I'm fortunate to know several of the best welders in my neck of the woods.
