Painting Hood Latches

Does anybody have a cool trick for painting hood latches? Some way to spread the top and bottom apart to get a bit of paint onto the lower hook shaft?

If you don't have enough paint to dip them in or are using a spray can, what I did to paint my restored latches was to cut a small piece of thin wood and put it on the top of the barrel and the underside of the top part when the top is all the way up. This way you can paint most of the top handle shaft that goes inside the barrel. I agree that dipping the latches coats every thing and is probably the best way to do it.

I'm painting my roadster with base and clear coat. Would dipping the latches with these coatings work or would it be a problem?

Use a large piece of angle iron, drill a couple of holes in the bottom flat leg portion to bolt the latch to then pull up and hook the latch on the other (vertical) leg. You may need to cut the height of the angle or drill a large hole in it at the proper height for your latch. You can get some color on the center shaft then when dry remove (let retract) and paint the rest as normal. :)

Just paint your latches and if you remember once in place, paint the shank with a brush. Too easy, do it for the Fine Point crowd all the time.
