According to Les Andrews Book, I have one too many parts (looks like I have an extra ball cap). What gives. People herein keep telling me to talk to my local club members, which I do (I have one comng over this Saturday to check out my progress) but I need answers "real time" and find that people on Ford Barn are usually quick to get back with me and know what they are talking about.

From Joe K's post, it looks like you have the innards of a drag link in the tie rod and back to front anyway. Back to front might have been the only way the person who assembled it could get everything in.

Plastic cups work best if your balls are not completely round. Metal cups if you have new balls.

Replacing the balls is not hard. Best to drill your hole with a slightly undersize drill and then press the ball into place. 12.5mm equals 0.492 which is "tight" but you can file or sand the ball shank to ease the interference fit a bit.

Once pressed in, it's a quick weld with a MIG.

I had all new balls installed on the front end, since they were oval and i was rebuilding my drag link and tie rod. I decided on nylon cups so in the future my balls, ha ha, will still be round and the nylon cups will be worn out. Much easier to install new cups. With modern grease, new seals, and retainers, should out live me I think. At least that's my thought train. On nylon cups vs steel cups.

It looks to me like all my components are in good shape. Should I still get the components that are plastic?

Plastic works. The axle of interest was originally "not too bad" worn and I used plastic in the rationale of "worn ball" issue. It served perfectly fine for about 10 years in its semi-degraded condition. It's not like the car is driven every day.

Now being re-done as original - new balls. BUT - I may decide to use plastic for the "easily replaced" aspect - and they are still sold as "making steering easier."

Which they do.
