Farleys34 post about his "original" 1934 Standard Coupe has brought about and interesting dive down the rabbit hole of the presence, OR not, of the Use on the door lock lever on 1934 Fords. In a recent discussion I was having the comment about them was made about ONLY seeing them on 4 Door Sedans?? My recent dive into the subject shows that Farley's 34 coupe has it present on the "passenger side" door but NO picture of the drivers door. I took these two photos of a 34 4 door off Ebay and neither door had the lock lever. ALSO I snagged this picture of a 34 Victoria (Hot Rod) with one present on the drivers door BUT not the passenger door. SO.....ANYONE have the history/story of when did they appear (early/late thing?), on which door should they have been, what body styles they appeared.....Etc etc????

SORRY two pictures I downloaded would not load here on Fordbarn

Here I am...
This car I know for a fact was in storage since 1949, not moved an inch until I "found it".
This is a very early '34, as I recall within the first 3000. That door in the photo is as it had always been. Right, wrong I do not know. I will attest to the fact that's as it had been since new.
We need Dave Rehor...

Mike, SO I take it to say, your passenger door is the same as the drivers in that there is NO door lock lever? ALSO, does yours have the "Standard" three digit speedometer???

Hope this helps...
I found out that it was (supposedly) odd that this standard coupe had a rumble seat.

Checking my Ford parts books...

1928-37 Hardware book
40-702310 Handle (inside door locking) 40-700, 720, 730, 760, 770.

1933-34 Body Parts book
40-712310 Handle (inside door locking) Used with center inside handle, 1934.

From that, the 1933 and early 1934 would not use it, the late 1934 would.

My deluxe '34 5 window has them on both doors. Body number is 45XXX so I'm guessing its late production?

Thank you ArtDoctor

Your frame number would be a more accurate number to determine an "approximate" time frame within the 34 model year.

Well, this is just a wild-*** guess:

1) Maybe the 33's and early 34's (front door handle setup) used a lock mechanism like 32's had --> by turning the door handle the opposite direction of 'open' to lock it.

2) When they moved the handle to the middle of the door, did they then add the little lock mechanism/handle we see in those pictures?

3) Both my 34's are later versions, they had center door handles and each door had the little lock handle up front.

I'm reminded of a story told by one of the old timers from here at work how he grabbed the inside door handle of his 34 Ford while driving, thinking he was grabbing the window winder and opened the door underway....AS you would imagine the wind caught the door and folded it backwards and about pulled him out of the car.....I would imagine sort of how they got the name "Suicide Doors".......AND was maybe more of an "occurrence" than we know, HENCE constitute the movement of location of the door opener???
