Mystery Part

I am ready to install my rebuilt engine into the car and found this part in a box with other project parts. I can't remember what it is and hope it isn't critical.

What is it?

Yes, it’s critical. It establishes proper spacing between the ends of the flywheel bolts and the back of the block, as well as prevents the flywheel dowels from coming out. Good thing you caught it and asked now as installing with the engine in the car is a pain, at the minimum.

Y-Blockhead has it right! It is a dowel retainer. This slide should be helpful.

Bob, I always enjoy your slides but an airline mechanic/inspector may have issues with your this slide. The wire should always be on the side of the bolt head to prevent it from loosening. The wire in the bottom left will not prevent that bolt from loosening.

I always make a complete connection of that safety wire by twisting the two ends together. What's another two inches of wire to ensure the bolts don't back out? Believe it or not, I have actually come across two engines, whose flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts had been COTTER PINNED instead of safety wired! What good did THAT do??? Morons...

I remember those metal rings on the flathead V-8s using special bolts that didn't require the lockwire.

Yeah, but it would have been a pisser if he had found it after he installed the engine.

I did that with my motorcycle, but taking it apart was a lot less work than pulling the engine back out to get at the flywheel. This was just another instance of saying to myself, "No special treatment needed for this doohickey, how could I forget it?" I should have put it in the same bag as the bolts.

I have four 7/16 x 1" bolts left over. No such is listed in the page in the red Les Andrews book, so I am perplexed. We'll see!
