I'm certainly not an expert, but the quick and easy way for me is to look at the cap. Screw on - 28-29, blade = 30-31.

There are numerous other differences.

True, unless it was made by another body maker, some had clip-on caps like more modern cars. The cowl shape is a good way to tell the difference.

Good Morning...The 28-29 tanks are 10 gallons and the 30-31 tanks are 11 gallons if my mind is working this morning...I think it is. Ernie in Arizona

The 28-29 has the upper part of the firewall made onto it,with a row of boltholes across it to bolt it to the lower firewall. The 30-31 has the front completely hidden behind the full height firewall. The 30-31 0nly has the top exposed, and the 28-29 also has the sides exposed.

So long as my @$$ points to the ground is it not possible to get 10 gallons in a 28/29 tank. 10 gallons is 45.4 litres. The most I have ever been able to put in is 43 litres from completely empty to full to the neck. Approximately 10 gallons at best just like Henry's 40 hp was approximate.

A US gallon is only 3.785 liters vs the Imperial 4.546 liters.

Hello, the 28 and 29 tanks are similar , 1930 tanks are entirely different, early 30 tanks use the oval speedometer, changed to a different instrument panel with round speedometer mid 1930 to end of production. Late 1931 has a modified tank for an indented firewall shutoff ,also has the steering column bracket located to cowl .Note bracket not shown in picture.

I was sure I was running on vapors the other day and when I filled up my '29, it took 9.924 gallons (US). That was cutting it too close!

That is 37.56 litres. Unless the pump had been rigged, I have put in close to 43 litres. I think you were a long way from waking!

Ford always had exceptions somewhere. The commercial pickups continued to use the 1928/29 type cab for several months in 1930. The gas tanks looked the same but they changed the filler bung for the new bayonet type cap used in 1930. Earlier tanks all had a scew on gas cap.

I have an early ‘30 Roadster, the gas tank has the ‘30-‘31 gas cap but the instrument panel has the oval speedometer.
