11 Years With The 52 Merc

Hard to believe its 11 years today since I hauled the Merc out of the woods to begin bringing it back into service but thats what it is. Some will look at the car today and say why don't I fix up that poor old car. This video shows just how bad it was when I started on it. It had sat in the woods since the early 1980s. There was moss growing on the North side surfaces of the car. Headliner hanging in tatters and the seats shredded covered in racoon and mouse droppings. Its come a long ways. Far enough for me to enjoy.

You should thank whoever put the rag over the carb. With the hood shut, that would keep a lot of crap out.

It was a plastic bag. Either myself or my brother had the foresight to put that on. The air cleaner screw had been twisted off at some point while working on it in the 70s. My biggest regret is not starting on it 20 or 30 years earlier.

I have a '53 4dr FORD just like it- same color. For Sale Newc

Interesting. Would that be fanfare maroon which is what mine was originally or is it lakewood green which is what I think the front fenders and hood are? I transplanted them onto my 52 from a 53 parts car since they were in much better condition. Got any pictures of your 53?

I’m subscribed to your YouTube channel and I enjoy watching the Mercury videos. Your car reminds me of the ‘53 Dad owned in the late ‘50’s it was his first automatic car he owned. Do you think you will ever get to get the Mercury pickup going.?

It never ceases to amaze me, when i watch the videos of old Fords and Mercs, being hauled out of a barn or woods and after few hours they are running again.

Thanks, and I guess never say never on old flatheads. 20 years ago if you'd asked me about getting the 52 out of the woods I'd probably have said no or maybe someday.

Sometimes it takes a little longer. I've been following this guy's channel lately as he slowly brings a Monarch 255 back. I did mine little different but he is making some progress. I actually saw that Monarch listed on an auction site in the next province a couple of years ago and was wishing it was a little closer to home to add to my "fleet". For those not aware the Monarch is pretty much identical to Mercury except for some badges and trim changes. https://youtu.be/PGthoMb1a4Q?si=e_hpf95h9_gvxgAq

Looks like a good driver quality car. As is often the case the good buys are way out of my range.

I see it has the standard issue "Korean War Chrome" on the grille.
A few hours with steel wool and diesel fuel can improve on that chrome quite a bit. I spent hours like that on my Merc and it wasn't that bad. Peeling a bit in places but not bad for rust.
