I have to ask : Is that the best choice for a newly rebuilt box, or only for worn units?

I use this in both fully rebuilt and restored as well as used units. I like it as it will not leak. Well, maybe it will but I'd never witnessed it.

Which of the two products are you two guys referring to, the AMS 250 or the JD cornhead ? I'm using the JD in all my old ford steering boxes, but a 250 wt lube from a company like Amsoil could have merit. What is the 250 wt product being marketed and packaged as?

I was referring to the JD "Cornhead Grease", as that is what has been recommended many times here and elsewhere.

Use the 140W suggested by Ford. Don't have to worry if the upper or lower bearing are getting lubed or the sector bushing.

I used a heavy weight oil as original and it leaked from my rebuilt box at the sector. I switched to corn head grease and it didn’t leak. I used corn head grease in a freshly rebuilt box and no leaks at all. And it turns great.

That has been my experience as well.

I rebuilt my '32 box and put really thick gear oil made for the rotational units on aerial booms we used at work. I was sure that it was so thick it wouldn't leak, wrong! Still leaked, ran off the gear box and onto the frame, down the frame and to the ground. Then I ordered a bunch of tubes of the John Deere grease, but I haven't installed it yet.

Today I digging my 1966 GT-350 out of the garage. It's been buried in the garage for over 40-years. Going to have it painted and finally finish it. It's a really nice straight Shelby.

Years ago, before I heard of Corn Head grease, I bought 2 bottles of Penrite grease to use in the steering boxes on my 2 Model A’s and 2 early V8’s. All 4 boxes leaked but the one in the ’34 roadster leaked profusely because the driver side exhaust pipe resides right next to it. I only needed 1 bottle to fill all four boxes. After all these years none of these boxes have leaked a drop and I still have the other unopened bottle.

I too, have had a good experience with Penrite. The problem was getting it in. I solved that problem with my heat gun.

I am using 140 gear oil I have the elongated tube for the light rod and placed an O-ring at the sector to frame joint. I am not losing much lube. This is in a Model A though.
