Gear Head

The term "head" came about in the 1960's. It was used to describe what a person was "in to." So there were "pot heads", "acid heads" (LSD), "speed heads." The term extends to modern usage such as "gear heads" where the person is deeply involved in gears (the mechanical aspects of cars). The terms used in the 60's have mostly gone out of favor, or I have gotten out of touch, being an ancient hippy and no longer involved in the counter culture.

It's in music too.The Grateful Dead,(dead heads)the band Phish,(phish heads).I worked for a guy where we all had names.Hammerhead, bonehead, knothead, chowderhead, fathead, and a few others. But,being a usually filthy truck mechanic with hair and a beard,I was mostly called scruffy.

That name for us was a floater. It was for the guy who happened to drive the pump truck that day.(we pumped septic tanks too)We didn't have a regular driver for that truck. We did have dedicated drivers for the lowbed, dump trailers, and dump trucks.Anybody that wandered through at the wrong time when a call came in would get elected.I didn't mind it at all,but the boss only sent me out when there was no one else.As the mechanic he said he was paying me far too much to have me in the pump truck.

Thanks. Good responses. I'm a gearhead. I find I love most working under a new find, cleaning, degreasing, replacing lost parts/bolts and studying Wha hoppened here??? Gives me the satisfaction of accomplishment. Clem

Tinkering with things mechanical is seriously therapeutic for me.
Our newest Model A will never be totally correct in all ways but I'll try to improve it along the way as I make it roadworthy.
Excellent chance we are or will be upside down in it financially, but the enjoyment received from the process makes it worthwhile to me.

In the UK we’d be petrolheads. They make fun of us because what we call gas is actually a liquid. Prior to about the mid 1960’s The NY Times used quotes around the word gas (“gas”) to indicate it was abbreviating gasoline, not referring to, say, propane.
