Early Ford Front Hub/Drum ***'y ID

Hi Folks,

I'm in quite a quandary trying to find correct drums for my '32. They cannot be machined out any further. The ***'y is not original to the car, but are OEM factory Ford parts.

I've attached several pictures of what I have, and was hoping y'all can tell me year and part numbers so I can get my car back on the road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would also be interested in purchasing once I know what I need is what I'm buying.

It looks like a post war Ford (47-48). The earlier ones (40-42) will work but I like to keep them matched. Post a picture of your brake backing plates, that may add more to the discussion. Especially include the 6 o'clock position on the backing plates.

Welcome to Fordbarn.

I had a hunch they weren’t original to the car, but hearing they’re likely ’47–’48 helps a ton. I’ll snap some photos of the brake backing plates this evening, especially the 6 o’clock position like you suggested.

Any from 1940 through 1948 will fit and work just fine. They have a differing appearance through those years, but all will work. And while it may be "nice" to match them, it is not necessary.

It looks as though the bolt pattern has been changed from the original 5 on 5-1/2 to a smaller pattern, possibly GM 5 on 4-3/4" (based on the rally wheels). This will make swapping drums out a little more difficult.

A competent machinist/fabricator could re-drill the smaller pattern on a different set of drums pretty easily though.

If those are aftermarket rally wheels you can get them in any bolt pattern. I don't think the pattern has been changed on the drums.

Not much doubt about it - welding done both inside and out.

I had noted the welds as well. I thought that the studs had been swapped. As many guys realize if they were not removed properly, they need to be welded back in vs. pressed.
I suppose until we know the bolt pattern, we can't be certain what had transpired.

Not much doubt at a glance that the bolt pattern being used is significantly smaller than the original as Neal stated. The heads on the replacement inner studs are starting to protrude past the center hole of the drum.

My dad welded one year of hub onto another year of drum. He was a machinist/fabricator and welder. If anyone can ID the hub part, drum part, bolt pattern, that would be helpful.

Thank you all for helping me work this out. I can't drive it until it stops blowing red lights and the death wobble subsides. Too many squirrels will meet their end at the front of this thing! LOL

Sandi, they’ve already figured out for you that the hub and drum are both 46-48 Ford passenger car. The bolt pattern has been modified, and although we can’t measure exactly through our screens, we guess the new dimension is 4.75” because the wheels you have are called Chevy rallys and they would be a 4.75”. You will need to have a trusted local machine shop modify the replacement hub/drum with some new studs to that pattern.

Im in Colfax CA. Not too far away from you. I have brake drums and can help you figure out the bolt pattern. Its not rocket surgery for some of us old guys... Lol
