To be really rigorous, you should get a copy of the MAFCA Paint and Finish Guide. It has swatches that are quite sizable and will let you get an idea of what the proper colors are. There are a lot of cars out there that are called “Ford Maroon” ranging from a dark brown-black to more of what we might think maroon would look like. Don’t rely upon a paint code, paint formulations continually change and what was an accurate code ten or even five years ago may not be identical today.
I’d suggest that you attend Model A events, join a local club, and find a car you like the look of. Then offer to buy the owner lunch if he’ll go with you to the local paint shop or painter to have it scanned. Even after scanning, some tweaking might be necessary by a really experienced technician to get it right.
And if you have not bought paint for a while, be prepared for sticker shock. Some colors are now going for $1000/gal, and need activator and special reducer on top of that. You don’t want to invest in a gallon of that stuff and find you don’t like the color once it gets sprayed out.
