Irregular Horn Operation.

Checking out irregular horn operation. Sometimes works, othertimes no or weak sound.
Have checked all connections all seem ok. Now have found that the horn relay is a 12V one. Could this be my problem area. Not enough voltage to pull in the coil to supply power to horn??
Appreciate assistance on this one.
Thanks Phil NZ

It could be, Phil. When the engine is idling or not running the battery volts might not be enough to pull the relay in, or maybe when the headlights are on or other heavy load. When the engine is running the generator is charging and the volts are up, it might have enough oomph to pull the relay in.

You can momentarily bypass the 12V relay and see if the horn works. The other thing is to put a voltmeter on the horn and see if you are getting battery voltage to it, if not, then you can do voltage drop test at different spots in the circuit to see where you are losing the voltage at.

Yes when momentarily bypassing 12v relay horn works real well and loud.

Thanks For reply Mart.
Bypass the relay and horn good and loud.Thats my thinking when engine running and charging enough oomph to pull it in. As seems when driving mostly ok. Got to have it right for local Warrant of Fitness testing required every 6 months. Thinking to locate and fit a 6 v relay.

Found this on Amazon, been thinking of getting a couple to put in my stash.

Pulled the existing 12v relay apart.
Adjusted the gap a little closer to make up for still running 6v. All connections cleaned up.
Road tested and horn is real strong and positive at horn button. Appreciate as always great assistance and advice given here.
Thanks Phil NZ
