40 ford gear shifter plastic knob

I would like to remove the gear shift lever knob so I can slide a switch on the shifter shaft near the end and knob. The knob turns but doesn't unscrew. How do I get it off? Thanks in advance

They were pressed on. I have never been able to remove one without destroying it.
If you are familiar with fencing nails, the lever has that sort of configuration. Kind of "barbs" that once the knob is pushed over, is not meant to release.
I have always ended up cutting mine through the side until it "splits". The reproductions are nice.

Thinking back I think the knob was missing so I actually didn’t have to remove it. But the new one did seem to twist in fine.

Some of GM cars of the 50s 60s and 70s shifter knobs came off by soaking them in boiling water, worth a try?

I cut mine off, clearly was barbed and not ment to slide or twist off. Got replacement coming so should be fine. Installed line lock and here is pix of button on the shifter. thanks for the help and info. this is a great site for help.
