For the guys who like 'em rough

Not as crusty as the Jeeps in the video but this is my ride. 1963, owned it for close to 50 years. In my younger days I was kind of rough on it. Now it’s just easy rides on dirt roads and an ice cream getter.

I had a CJ2A with a front winch that ran off the crankshaft snout. It was fairly rusty and it got some tough use and one day it just quit. I forget the details but I sold it to a friend who put a new cam gear in it and it lives on. Not one of my best moves.

Winch looks big, like a ww2 chevy winch. Nice rig, gotta agree with GB its nice to see one in original dress, no roll bar or fancy wheels. My M38, as clean as it was still required welding shut about 60 holes from the roll bar, and mostly the fancy new top they put on instead of just buying an original army top made to fit and probably very cheap in those days

I like the Bush and Outback! I would not have seen a vid like this (Jeeps running up rocky streams, etc) but for your mention. watched it all, enjoyed it all! :)

Thanks for the comments.
cas3, good eye. The rear winch is a 8,000 lb Ramsey that I'm reasonably sure was available as a dealer installed option. The front is an old military Braden winch rated for either 8 or 12,000 lbs. I had to extend the front frame rails a few inches to fit it in. The trick was getting a driveshaft from the PTO to the front. They both run well, and I use them often for all kinds of stuff.

This one would look good moving firewood on Mt. Pickett……..Mark

Mark, in the immortal words of David Allen Coe..." If that ain't country I'll kiss yer a**". But I have an old case skidsteer with forks that handles all my firewood in a self contained woodshed on skids. I pick it up and drive to my wood pile down below, fill the woodshed and set it back up in front of the house. And since this is my thread I don't think this qualifies as a hijack if I post this truck I bought about 2 miles away from my house. A friend called me from a yard sale and told me this had a for sale sign on it so I bought it for 5000.00 and hopped in and drove it home. . It wasn't really in my wheelhouse so I sold it to the same friend that had bought my willys for 7500.00, but I kept the 12,000 lb warn off the rear. Win, win for both of us. On my 'garymtpickett' channel.

GB the Dodge 6x6 was quite a manly rig! Was it a w2 6x with a civilian cab installed, or all home made? I've had the skelital remains of 2 WW2 dodge 6x's , but never a good one.

I'm pretty sure it was built from a civilian model. The builder lived here on Orcas in the 90s, but I think he brought it to the island as is. He did a nice PS conversion and it was a complete runner when I bought it with no issues. The seller was a widow who's husband had some 30 or so collector cars and this was the last vehicle left. She and her new friend were moving outa state in 2 days so it had to go. First thing my buddy did after he bought it was take it to a large car show near where he lives. The main theme of the show has always been 'No 4wd's'. He just smiled at the guy at the gate as he drove in....(and got a trophy).

Was it a 6 wheel drive?

I’ve always liked surplus military stuff but never came across one I could buy at the time. There’s a couple guys local to me that have two or three each of flat fender flat roof trucks. I admit to knowing little about that stuff. I thought the Jeep with the loader was a nice looking rig………Mark

Looks like a cousin to my doodlebog log skidder. They both fit right into this thread. Couple of hard workers.

How many old timers here remember seeing ads selling “War Surplus Jeeps for $200” ? I forget the details, but those ads were in multiple magazines like Mechanics Illustrated.
