After 44 years of family ownership I've decided to replace the leaking windshield seal on my 52 merc. I'm at the point of installing the seal. It's from Carpenter and doesn't quite conform to the glass. It's very tight and doesn't want to stay in place. This is my 2nd try as the 1st time it wasn't fitting well at all. Now it's almost on with lots of tape and string holding it in place. Not sure how the stainless trim will go in with all the tape and string in the way. Taking my time to not do anything stupid by rushing.
Anyone done this job?
Thanks, Rob
Done on a 57. It better if the rubber is warm. You have to figure out the top or bottom and then find the center of the rubber. Mark it with tape. Them install the stainless centered . You might have to blue tape it on. Thwn install the pull rope. You might have tape that on also.
Then set the glass down and find the center top. Start adding the rubber onto the glass from the center and around each way.
Of course all of this is easier with a helper. but I have done it on my own.
Just a lot of blue tape.
Some people but the rubber in dry or use :m windshield caulking.
If you are using the caulking. I would recommend masking about 1" outside of the rubber and stainless area on the body of the car. The caulking can easily get everywhere.
The masking tape or paper you put down make clean up easier later.
As far as adding the glass with everything onto to the windshield hole. You should once again when ready make the center of the wishing at the top or near the top at the glass with a piece of masking tape and a sharpie.
Then do the same on the body above where the glass will be going.
So when you got to put the glass in you can line them up. You can do the at the top and bottom. But when adding the window to the frame tjisnis where you decimated need some help pushing on the outside as someone pulls the rope. I find easier to set the bottom edge and go around to the top on each aside.
Thanks! I've done a few before but this one has been challenging. I do have calking and am very aware of the mess.
I'll use the tape to mark the center as suggested. It may be awhile but I'll post when it's done.
