What do you recommend to seal the gap?

Yes, foam backer rod. Shove it compressed into the gap.

Home Depot also sells strips of foam that are square in cross section (1"x1", 2"x2", etc.) and a few feet long. Stuff strips in there.

This area of the car won't get wet in car wash or rain, unless the whole body is under 2 feet of water.

I never have used sound deadening on any of my A’s. I need to hear what they're telling me when I’m driving. I’m not being glib. I mean it.

I asked Google about foam backer rod and it indicated that it contains open cell foam:

” . . . Open-cell foam allows air to pass through the backer rod, which allows the sealant to cure faster. It will absorb water, so it should primarily be used indoor.”

Would this cause a problem when it rains or when you wash the car?

David Serrano

You can get closed cell backer rod also.
