Front axle spindle diameter

Question on front spindle changes amongst the years. I ordered a set of nuts (A1193) and washers to replace my worn parts. Passenger side fit fine however the driver's side spindle was undersized. So much so that the nut went right thru the threaded spindle. Was there a model year change? My OCD needs me to change this so it's accurate. Wanted to make sure this wasn't normal before I ordered parts.

Thanks!

They were one size 28-31. We just found the same problem on a friends Fordoor. It appears the original threads were messed up and they re threaded the spindle for a smaller nut. There was still about 1/8" of the original threads still there.

I've seen that done on the rear axles as well.

Appreciate the inputs, off I go to the races! My steering has been a little stiff, so I have another excuse to replace everything

Is it safe to have them re threaded down a size? I certainly have seen it on both front and back spindles but worried that they may be suspect to catastrophic failure.

John, I think enough people have been doing it for long enough that we can accept it is OK. There is a large safety margin built into the design of all automotive components.
