Borg Warner R10 OD Removal

Hi All,
I will be removing my Borg Warner R10 OD to install a Mitchell OD and had a few questions since I did not do this installation. Do I just need to disconnect the radius rods and then remove the torque tube bolts from the rearend? Then slide the Borg Warner OD off and I am left with a short stub driveshaft similar to the Mitchell OD?

Thanks,
Denny

Those front stub shafts are nothing alike. You need to remove the whole rear end,and swap the whole torque tube and it's innards. You also need to take the pinion gear off your driveshaft and install it on the Mitchell.

Hi Keith,
Sorry I wasn’t clear enough on my explanation. My rearend is already out of the car. And I understand that I will need to remove my pinion and install on the Mitchell stub driveshaft. My question is more towards how to remove the Borg Warner OD that is currently installed. i have disconnected the radius rods by the front of the torque tube. I have also removed the torque tube bolts at the rearend connection. Should the Borg Warner OD now just slide off? Am I needing to do anything else to remove the current OD?

Thank you,
Denny

I suspect it depends on how it was constructed.
I would think a piece of a slip yoke was welded to a stub of original driveshaft,in that case it should pull off.

The pinion and bearings on the stub shaft have to come out of the banjo center section so it might be a bit tight coming out of there but it will come out with a puller. It may be splined at the front of the stub shaft to mate with the OD unit. If that's the case then the OD unit may have to come off the rear section of the torque tube first to get at the drive shaft stub that fits into the banjo otherwise the torque tube and OD unit may slide off together but leave the stub shaft in situ. I've seen them but never worked on one to be able to tell you with certainty. Some one with experience could add more. There were several shops doing these conversions back in the day so there may be differences depending on that.

On my BW OD, the unit simply slides into a spline coupling which was welded to the shortened drive line stub shaft.

Thank you AzBob! That is exacly the picture I needed to see and the explanation of a spline coupling is how it attaches. My OD looks exactly llike yours. Thank you to everyone else who also commented.

Is your B/W busted?

Hi Gene,
No the B/W works fine. There are a couple things I do not paticularly like when in use but that OD has served its purpose. I happened to come across a drivetrain that included a Mitchell OD for a bargain price I could not pass up. So I am swapping the B/W out for the Mitchell.

Update
I was able to remove the OD unit from the rearend. Attaching a picture of the remaining driveshaft stub with welded coupler incase anyone in the future needs a reference. Thanks everyone.
