Edelbrock Super dual

First, I’m seeking a KONG distributor, so if anyone has one, contact me.

Today I checked my new intake, inspiration from the Bell Auto catalog.
This is the Edelbrock super.

This intake I hear is one of the best FH intakes, but was it drags or TQ before a curve ?
Or did they simple get out more HP.

I has read they came out direct after war.
I had the E&S direct port intake ( boat racing ? ) but could not get it to fit my water tubes from the L&S heads, so I traded into the Thickstun PM 7.
I never really like it as to high and heard runners was bad designed, but a true hotrod classic.
But I came over this old cast Super Dual intake ( 1/10 the price if the PM 7 )
Idea is to remove the Scintilla and try find a KONG and use the short 59A pumps, but alternator must be moved.
This is a very cool hotrod set up.

Now questions.
I note in Bell catalog 1951 it said 49-51 and it shows 8 bolts on each side.

But had Edelbrock 2 version of the Super Dual intake, one for the 59 and the 8B ?
Or was it ’race’ and one for the street ?

Change in crank case ?

One thing I notice the part to oilfiller is to long as the mounts is lower than on the PM 7.

If you use the Super, the generator will need to be off set. Can make an idler pulley set up to accept the fan from an older style generator if you wish which would be easiest in terms of fab work.

I notice the newer made Super intakes has not the generator mount in front, as I has on my intake, but in Bell catalog it was also ’Dual’ intake that has not the generator mount and not even the fuel pump mount.
Texy is fuzzy from pictures I seen, so I cant see why they made that intake (?)

Bell also show a adaptor on a engine with the Super intake on.
-But what was that purpose ?

On a idler pulley, I has been on that idea, but can this belt survive pressure from outside.

Those are V8 60 intakes & heads.

That adapter looks like a mount for the 42 and later V8 fans that run off a second belt forward of the water pump / generator belt.

The one in the picture is a Weiand. Original Edelbrock Super had a generator mount and was heated.

The newer repop does not have the generator mount and is not heated.

My late friend, Jack Calori, set the early 1947 record SCTA record with that Weiand wide spaced two-carb intake. That was about the end of the two-carb intakes setting records at El Mirage. Weiand did make a front bracket for an idler pulley that bolted to the front four intake bolts. I've only ever seen two of those Weiand script brackets in all my years of flathead hunting. I bought one of them just in case I needed it. The other one is on my friend's clone of Jack Calori's Roadster.

The problem with the Kong distributors is finding the caps and rotors. They came from one year only in the early 1930s, there were something like 800 of them made for a low production V8 Cadillac or Lincoln (damn stroke, I can't remember which one it was). They are so brittle that almost every one of the Kongs I have seen for sale have cracked caps or the caps are missing. I was friends with Kong and even he didn't have any caps, he couldn't get them. I asked him, why the hell did you choose the lowest production V8 ever made. He said it wasn't problem getting them back then. I have one of his distributors missing the cap, Years' ago there was a NOS cap for sale for something like $800.00. I thought they were nuts but it's the only cap I have ever seen for sale. Those Kong distributors were the very best of the early race distributors, but they cost "a lot" when they were new. I doubt that very many of them ended up on the street. If you decide to run one you better inspect the cap. Don't bother buying a distributor that's missing the cap unless you plan to reproduce it. If you do, I'll take one.

Can you show me the Weiand idler ?!

Yes I heard it on the KONG that the cap is the issue.
I guess chance someone do a repop is none.

So I guess a Kurten fits best to my aplication or just stick with the Scintilla.

Those Weiend brackets are used for mounting a 59AB style fan set-up with the two bolt Ford bracket, correct? If you use an original Edelbrock, no need for the hard to find bracket since it has the gen mount cast into it.

The Edelbrock Super is a good 2-carb manifold - will work great. I still think you'll have issues attempting to run the 49-53 style Scintilla/Vertex mag with early water pumps . . . too many belt issues. You'd be better off with a Harman Collins dual coil - based on a crab style distributor. Or just a correctly setup crab style distributor - they will work fine with the RPMs you'll be running.

Youre right, Ronsroadster told be direct the only way solve it is 8B truck pumps..
So either way on intake or generator location the belt is into distributor.
I might can bought a H&C dual pointers with a new cap ( not std but will be free of rotor issue ) and it has 2 NOS Mallory coils.
I think I can afford a KONG with a good cap if I seriosly like to has one, but as invested so much time in the Scintilla maybe I need to realise my engine must has the 8B parts, and I has a limit at max 1950 on parts plus I has the crank/rods 4” stroke.
But the Super intake looks cool.

FlatheadFever, what happends after 47, was it Hilborn, superchargers, nitro etc.
-I wonder how this Super intake works both in TQ and highend RPM vs the PM7.

The later truck pumps will work with the mag, but will the further forward crank pulley work in a 32 frame with the engine in the stock location? The answer is --> "it depends" - on what you're using for a front cross member and how do you plan do do your motor mounts?

Using a 59AB style pulley and the early water pumps, the crank pulley just barely clears the stock front cross-member. Now, if you cut the cross-member and or put an aftermarket one like a Model A cross, then the situation is different.

In the end it will depend on the front cross member you'll be running and where/how you'll setup your motor mounts.

My frame has a std cross in front but all parts behind is cutted off.
I will use 60 HP 36 engine mounts and Drake rubberso I will use the pump mounts to frame.

The KONG can play against the Scintilla in my world, so if anyone read this and has one with a good cap I’m all ears on the ($)
I will try to borrow a set of 8B pumps and see how I feel..
I’m going to a swap here in Sweden this weekend so I hope I can find a alternator to head bracket, but are there 2 versions as one to 59 pumps and the longer 8 pumps.

Hey Hank. I had a stroke and ever since then I have not been able to get my new pictures out of the phone and into the computer. I swear the phone had a stroke to but's it's probably me, it's beginning to piss me off. I like posting photos. I have the Weiand bracket sitting right here.

Any vintage go fast distributer will work. I like the Kong distributors because he was my friend. I have a habit of choosing parts because old-time friends used them, or a favorite car had them. I don't worry about which part is better, I just like the history of them.

Pretty sure that's what they were used for. I have a bunch of old speed catalogs out in the garage. I buy everyone from the 1950s I find. I keep meaning to see if that Weiand adapter is for sale in one of them. I might even have an old Weiand catalog. The problem with the stroke I had is I can't remember to do stuff. My attention span is gone. I'll be 63 tomorrow but I feel like I'm 93. A stroke is weird deal. One minute I was fine and the next minute my had brain had gone whacko. It's like somebody hit the delete button to part of it in there.
