57 Ford ignition-58 Ford Ignition-difference?

Long story short.a friend of mine has a very nice 58 Custom.. all stock with a 292-3 speed.
Car drives incredible.
He recently needed a new ignition switch.... ordered one from Carpenters.... and when he went to install.. the chrome bezel that holds the ignition switch to the dash(locking) wouldn't work because the Chinese off shore repro part was machined improperly to accept the locking bezel.
Frustrated and miffed.... He called and asked if I had a spare ignition switch.
Yes.I have several with keys from various parts cars.....
They are all completed.

so I let him make his choice and off he goes......
Next day he calls and says it won't fit..... telling me the switch itself is "too short".

I have always thought there was no difference in the 57-58 ignition switch.... the 57-58 dash is basically identical....
Am I wrong here?
Yes. my switches are complete with the coiled spring that wraps around the body and gives tension on insertion.
I know they have different part numbers... but am I missing something here?

This gentleman is a senior and has many cars... not a newby.

The IGN SW itself is the same. It seems the difference(s) between the 57 and 58 are the mounting plate insert (BPN 11575) and the BEZEL (BPN 11584). Both are model year unique.

If you find the definite answer, please get back.

BTW - It is not nice to post exhaust tones on your '57 @ H.A.M.Bone and not here ... :D

HA!
I can't seem to post a vid here K.....
the switch thing and the mounting plate seems to be the answer

I will investigate further

HA!

And thank you K!

So I relayed the info on the switch to the party that needed it.. Work is being done and all will be resolved.thanks a bunch.

Jeff

I changed the keyway in mine... A person could hotwire a 57 in just a jiffy, because that switch comes outta there so easily. You do not even need tools.

While coming out of BRAIN FOG and overcoming some minor reading/comprehension difficulties, it sounds as all he needs is the 1958 BEZEL - B8A 11584-A, IF the CHI-CON SLOPPY COPY IGN SW is a correct copy.

IGN SW (NOS) - B5A 11572-A

If anybody need a B8A-11584-A bezel I have NOS ones from when I had my dealership. I don't think they were reproduced.

K-He has an original Locking 58 Bezel... its the Chinese repro ignition switch that isn't machined to accept the original Bezel...I don't know where my friend(John) is at with this need at the moment... but I will find out.

1942deluxe-I will mention this to my friend John when we speak again...I am that guy that collects 2 of everything for a car... because. well.. you just never know.
Thanks!

Jeff

That sounds about right ... CHI-CON SLOPPY COPIES ...

As NOS parts become more scarce (and expensive) it is going to hurt the hobby. Most everything will have to go to resto-mod... :(

NOS - B5A 11572-A - IGN SW 1952/1959 FORD - GIGGLE IT

- THANX FOR THE UPDATE! -

EDIT -

CARPENTER shows a dedicated copy - https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/trucks/electrical/ignition/b5a-11572-a-ignition-switch-housing-only

Features:

• Electrical Switch Housing

• Exact Reproduction of Original

But the page does not show - FORD LICENSED

STANDARD IGNITION may also be a source as they usually offer good quality parts.

KULTULZ, I don't have what I used to but enough to alarm my wife. I've been slowly doing an inventory and need to put it in the swap meet section.

No, you understand and are ahead of the game. As NOS runs out and salvage yards disappear, it will only become more difficult to repair/restore older vehicles. Even buying donor cars will become difficult.

And may the LORD help you if you tear one up ...

Well. update and resolved.....
The issue was that some previous owner of the this 58 Ford messed with the inner plate(PT# 11575)... It was hogged out to accept a newer generic ignition in its place.
the solution was to use a few shims in various thickness to hold the 57 ignition in place and the desired point.I believe the outer ignition spring was tweaked a swell to give a bit more resistance.
I do apologize.. but I got this as second hand info....
But all is running and back together.

Nothing to apologize for Jeff, appreciate the update.

Ain't that something? So the off-shore switch (if it was) accepted the retainer after all?
