Original Model A horn

So it goes straight from "no contact on the diaphragm" to "ahooo" to "buzz" and there's no sweet spot where you get the right sound?

Yes, that's pretty much the deal. There are about 2 turns before it starts to change the tone.

I have found that as little as a 1/16 circumference turn will make the difference between too tight and just right.

Felt looks a little dry...try a couple drops of oil at both ends of the armature

...And make certain the diaphragm is installed properly so it is oriented for the notches in the "zig-zag star" to slide over the flat side of the chisel point on the diaphragm...I have seen them installed incorrectly...easy enough to do.

I have restored several units Mr Deal did the electrics for me. After many tries with no Ga I found the repro diaphrams are .001 too thick. It makes no differance who I bought them from. I have several repro diaphrams that can be had real cheap. Mr. Deal is fighting the big C!!! He has 4 motors of mine. We are getting close to a year wait.

I have restored several units that Mr Deal did the electrics for me. Very good and powerful motors. He has 4 motors of mine that is getting close to a year of waiting. I'm not pushing he is fighting the big "C". I found the repro diaphrams are .001" too thick. It made no difference where I bought them. They will not give a "GA". They can be had real cheap...

Apologize for duplicate responses.

I spoke to Jim Diehl's son and Jim was listening to our conversation, and recommended 3-4 drops of 5w30 oil on both ends of the shaft. I plan on trying that as soon as I pick up some oil.

Also, I have swapped out reproduction for originals and still no GA.

I'll check the orientation of the diaphragm, but believe it to be correct.

Practically any oil will serve here, no need to buy something special. Use whatever weight is on hand.

I think the problem is the diaphragm. I had an original that was rusted through in a couple spots, and I tried a few when the repros came out, but they just don’t work. I found a food original at a swap meet, and when I got that installed and checked and adjusted all other aspects of the horn, it worked perfectly. My suggestion: find a good original.

I have an original in it now and I've had a few more originals and reproductions and can't find the GA.

If the motor is weak then is may not be able to pull the tension necessary to make the proper sound. Here are several more repair people to check.
