Torque tube seal #4245 removal

Working on my torque tube and looking for an easy way to remove the axle seal #4245. I made a tool this after and have already pulled out the axle bearing sleeve #4655.

I may have to buy a slide hammer.

Thanks Jim for the link. That’s one way to do it.
I’ve been thinking going in the front end and pulling it with something like an oversized pilot bearing puller or some clever way
…

Glenn: Here's an idea to remove that seal using a slide hammer to pull it out like you suggested on the front. I have a slide hammer that has a Jacob chuck jaw on the front and have used this technique on other seals. You just have to be careful not to pull on the inner lip that holds seal inside torque tube.

Here's a cheap and easy to make tool for removing axle seal using a toggle bolt (cut to size), a long 3/8-16 threaded rod or bolt, a flat metal strap with a flat washer and a 3/8 nut that lays on top of torque tube bell. Turn nut clockwise to pull out seal. Carraige bolt is shown because that's what I had on hand to fit the toggle and make this (not to scale) photo.

You will have to make the expandable legs of the toggle shorter so they can slip in the bearing hole and then open up to seat on the bearing, not the retainers. The toggle bolt jaws can take quite a bit of pulling force without buckling.

Ha, I was thinking about using a toggle bolt too!
I did make a mini slide hammer but the seal is deep in the well and was not going to come out. The other issue is the ID for the front bearing race is long so the seal has to come out of its pocket and then move through another couple of inches of the bearing race hole.

I remembered that I had 40 drive shaft that was full length so onto plan B and still hard to move.

Really hard getting it out, exasperated by having to push the seal out of its pocket and then through the bearing race/sleeve too. Technique was to position the front of the driveshaft on the bottom part of the seal, then lift the back end up in the opposite direction, then hit it with the hammer, rotate the torque tube and repeat. As the the driveshaft progressed into the TT, I slipped a 1-1/16" deep socket over the shaft end and hit that.

In retrospect, I should have heated the torque tube locally with a heat gun to expand the TT ID a bit. I did this when I put the replacement seal in.

There is probably a KRW tool for this that the tool hoarders have on their wall :D
