The ebay "rebuilt" generator I bought last year from a guy who's been doing it for "umteen yaears" on ebay, made a noise when I put it on. After removal and inspection it appeared only to have had a paint job. After bearing, bushing, commutator cleanup, and fixing the excessive end play, it's fine.
