Carb leak

Have a 1930 pickup put a tiltson carb on removed the zenith carb, and new it seems the carb keeps getting fuel even with fuel shutoff at tank. Does fuel shutoff need be replaced or is there some reason the tiltson carb would still be getting fuel even with shutoff valve on.

If you take the gas line loose at carb and the gas valve is off there should be no gas coming out of gas line, if there is gas valve is bad

Probably a leaky valve. To confirm, disconnect the fuel line at the carb and put the end into an empty water bottle overnight. A collected quantity of 1 or 2 ounces over 24 hours is enough for a carb to leak. Let us know how it goes.

If your valve leaks and you want to continue to use it, you can add some EZ-Turn lubricant, see https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/ezturnlube.php. The lub works as a sealant but is not effected by gasoline. If you use your car a lot and turn off the gas each time the engine is turned off, you will have to add more lubricant every 6 months or so. The lub will keep the valve from galling.

nkaminar, I bought some of this grease at your suggestion. Great stuff. I use it on carburetor throttle shafts to help prevent leakage.

Appreciate all replies but my other concern is if I remove valve from tank am I opening a can of worms with possible leaking or cracking something at the tank

Not likely, because at the exit of the tank there is a bung there. Think of it like a huge flat washer that is threaded. Tighten the neve valve in there, but don't go crazy. Do yourself a favor; 1) buy the new valve at Snyders, 2) but the pencil filter that goes into the intake at the valve before you put it up in the tank.

This should be obvious, but drain out all the gasoline first and put something under the valve to catch the last few drops.
