help! clutch won‘t disengage…

Re: help! clutch won‘t disengage…

As I recall, if you remove the floorboards and the clutch inspection window cover, you can see the springs as they come past. Use the hand crank to turn the engine over???

Re: help! clutch won‘t disengage…

I've had the same issue before the pin on the fork that pushes the throw out bearing sheared in my case the fork moved the throw out bearing moved but not enough to disengage if a spring came loose in the clutch disk you can see that looking through the inspection cover with a flashlight.

Tom, I'm glad it was the lever as I suggested (post #16). They always crack thru the pin hole. That is a relatively easy fix compared to a pressure plate.

Bratton's has the longer arm that makes it easier for tired old left legs to depress the clutch pedal.

Re: help! clutch won‘t disengage…

yes, this failure mode has been suggested, but, as i saw something moving within the flywheel housing, i ruled it out. stupid me.

looking at the arm on the photos, it looks really fragile and it was just a defect waiting to happen…

the car is in other peoples hands at the moment as all this happened 50mls away from my home. funnily enough, it‘s at a ‚modern‘ ford garage right now. they did not want to discuss warranty though… 😂

Tom, from what I have read, originally the arm was keyed and pinned but somewhere along the line the 'bean counters' decided it would be cheaper to eliminate the key and keyway and make the pin larger in diameter. But they neglected to reinforce the arm. Just another item to watch out for on these ol' Girls.

90 years later we see a lot of these arms breaking... right thru the larger hole.:rolleyes:

Here is a picture of an early arm with the keyway.

Tom - Thanks for the final report. Many will benefit from your experience !

Re: help! clutch won‘t disengage…

The Model A is a great car and the Ford engineers did a great job designing it. But they made a mistake with the clutch arm when the keyway was eliminated and the pin diameter increased. I carry a spare clutch arm and pin.
