Distributor rebuild.

I ordered a "modern" rebuild kit from Moss. My question is:
In the kit there is a small piece of hose (it really looks like the jacket on the wiring harness, kind cloth like). I have no idea what that is for. Anyone know?

Thanks

I have no idea what that is and it doesn't show up anywhere else in Moss's catalog. Maybe call them and ask?

If I remember correctly I think it goes around the end of the bottom plate where the early condenser would normally attach. The purpose is to prevent the plate from touching the housing and shorting out. Without the condenser attached I guess it could move around enough to make contact.

That is used to cover the tab on the lower plate that would normally attach to the stock type condenser. Since this kit comes with the "modern" (junk) style condenser, that tab is just floating free down there and could short to the housing.

I always suggest using the original style condensers for several reasons, even when using "modern" points or even the wireless upper and lower plate. One important reason is the condenser attaching to that tab on the lower plate gives the lower plate electrical connection tab SO much more rigidity, so that when the ignition cable is screwed into the housing, the connection tab does not bend, and keeps good tension against the button at the end of the ignition cable for good low-resistance electrical reliability, and helps prevent a short to ground.

Also, nearly HALF of the "modern" style condensers I have checked show (electrical) leakage right out of the package. They must be made of especially cheap chinesium or something.

Modern yuck ! Rebuild it back to original with a burn proof condenser and with some simple maintenance 10’s of thousands of happy motoring ! IMHO
