Backfiring when in 3rd gear

The car idles and runs fine in 1st and 2nd gear but when I shift into 3rd it backfires badly sputtering then stalls. It will restart and run but will stall again. I’ve checked the timing which seems ok and the fuel shut off is relatively new with screen. I’ve never done anything with the sediment bowl which looks like it’s cast iron, could that be an issue? Help!

If it hasen't been cleaned out there is a screen in there, turn gas valve off-remove bottom of bowl and have a look, maybe full of rust etc. or could be a defective condenser.

It is starving for fuel. Do as Gary says. If you still have problems there is fuel blockage somewhere. I suspect that if you climb a steep grade in second gear with the pedal to the metal you will find that the engine will sputter and cough then too.
