1940 Ford Deluxe Sedan

Hey everyone, first-time poster and first-time 1940 civilian car owner. I just picked up a 1940 Deluxe Fordor Sedan a few days ago and brought it home. Needs a bit of work, has been sitting for some time and the fuel pump failed, but otherwise has been kept in good shape in a garage. Only 30k miles, and everything is pretty much original except someone put racing wheels on, but it came with (apparently) the factory wheels which are in the trunk. I'm the fourth owner of the vehicle.

I'm no stranger to vintage vehicles, as I did a complete frame-off factory restoration of a 1944 Ford-built GPW Jeep. But, the world of vintage civilian vehicles is a bit of a new one for me, so I'm learning along the way and had a few questions I hope some of you might be able to help out with. Apologies in advance!

- What was the size of 'stock' factory wheels? And how can I best check that they are, indeed, the factory wheels? The beauty rim and hub caps are gone, so it's just the rim and tires. I assume the tires for this would be white wall Firestone 600x16 - 3 1/4? I'm not looking to be judged, so I just want something that looks right and handles well on Southern California streets/freeways.

- I have a 1940 Ford dealer show album book which details this vehicle. In it, one of the features says a dimmer switch for the instrument lights. But I can't seem to find it. Where was that located?

- There's also mention of a windshield wiper knob, to adjust the wiper speed I assume? Where would that be?

- There's an issue right now with keys. I have the ignition key which works fine, but the passenger door lock is jammed to the point I think it's unusable. I tried tinkering with it, but it's not budging, even with WD40. So I have to be very careful I don't lock all the doors. I got a new passenger lock to install, but it has a different key than the ignition (of course). Is there a way to match the keys? I know the trunk is a different key than the ignition/door which didn't come with the car, so it's always unlocked. Is it easy to replace just the lock inside the handle of the trunk?

- The instrument panel came with a chrome bezel face and no glass. Looking at stock shots, it seems it should have a plastic bezel face with line decorations on it and glass behind that. All easy to get, but wanted to confirm that it's stock and that this chrome one is not a dealer add-on.

- Any good detailed books out there I could get started with that really breaks down the vehicle and what it should look like? I have an original 1390-1940 Ford/Mercury parts list with the exploded diagrams which will help. But anything with a lot of visual reference would be great.

Thanks everyone!

1940 cars came with 16 x4 rims. 1940 rim characteristics are identified in this thread.

Instrument light dimmer switch is screwed onto the bottom of the dashboard right below the instrument cluster and next to the steering column. They are being reproduced. DeLuxe and Standard are different color.

REMEMBER: Buy all his books and read every post by Mike Kubarth (Kube) on Fordbarn and anywhere else you see his name. He knows more about 1940 Fords than any other living person and is willing to share his knowledge.

Also get these books: Prices vary so look around.

Below is what the OEM 40 DeLuxe dash cluster looks like. This one is OEM. The chrome cover you have is an aftermarket "hot rod goody" never made by Ford.

Windshield wiper switch is located in the base of the windshield divider garnish molding inside the car.

Do a Fordbarn search on "trunk lock", door lock, door latch etc. and you will find lots of helpful info.

Welcome and good luck with your new project. I sent you a PM.

Thanks! Pulled the trigger on it after your post!
I am sure, at some point, "Kube" here on Fordbarn will help you with one of your future questions on your car......When they say "He wrote the book" on 40 Fords.....HE DID. You also have some "other" very very capable 40 "guys on here, OF which both have pontificated their wisdom. You are in good hands Sir.

AND "WELCOME" here on the barn, I am a FORD "Jeep" guy as well as I have a 41 GP and a 44 GPW.

Thanks for all the info!

- I forgot to mention that I do have a green bible, but in PDF form.
- So I have one of the 1940s upgrade radio antennas that goes up the middle inner windshield. So I don't see that knob on my dash for the wipers, but there is a silver ring behind the antenna so maybe it's just missing the knob.
- thanks for the link on the rim identification, that will be very helpful. I'll take a look at them and see exactly what I have.

Thanks! I need to rack up some more posts before I can post photos or URLs, but I'm slowly getting there. Then I can post some shots! I did use a shot of it (before the bath I gave her once I got her home) in my avatar.

Good looking 40!
Looking forward to pictures and maybe see you at at national meeting?

Chris and Cheryl

Thanks! I'd love to start going to some meets when I'm able. I missed out on a swamp meet around here in Orange County for a local V8 club that happened last Saturday, only found out about it on Tuesday. Doh! And the huge Pamona, CA Car Show/Swap Meet was 99.99% Chevy parts much to my disappointment.

Thanks Pete for the enlargements.

Warbird: Here's a 40 sedan that shows interior with antennae and dash radio. Open and scroll down for photos.

Thanks! I'll save those into my reference photo archive. All great material to help me out here.

And the radio antenna looks just like that with that setup. That's all complete and the knobs/nuts are there. But behind it, where I think the wiper knob should be there's a split where the interior windshield divider meets the garnish moldings that has a silver ring of some sort recessed in there, which might be where a knob for the wipers would go?

Warbird: Here's the way the wiper knob assembly appears from under the dash.
You can see the bottom of plastic plug for the antennae hole in the dash if car didn't come with a radio.

That's incredibly helpful. thank you! I'll be using those shots to help me locate that. In just a few more posts I should be able to start posting photos myself so I can start to figure out what's missing/broken on the dash.

To answer your tire question: most new cars sold in 1940 came with blackwall tires. Your car would have had 6.00-16 tires installed new by Ford. Blackwalls were common, whitewalls were extra cost option and are so common now people think they were the only tires sold. If you really want authenticity wait until you get the 40 Ford Book and follow the pictures and advice provided there.
