54 Mercury Fuel pump question

Just bought a 54 Monterey. How do I identify whether i I have dual action fuel pump or not??

This is what it looks like. The tube that is bent may be just straight out. Seen them both ways.

Mine does not have the glass fuel bowl on top. Does that mean it is a standard fuel pump??

At the risk of overstating the obvious...
The two larger fittings are for the fuel inlet & outlet and the two smaller connections are for boosted vacuum to the windshield wiper motor and heater controls, as optioned.

Both of these fuel pumps work with my 1959 312.

This is a "regular" single action fuel pump. When installed, it is orientated so the glass bowl is at the bottom.

This is the "Dual Action" fuel pump. The fuel inlet/outlet is at the bottom, and the vaccum ports are at the top.

Incendentally, I didn't need a DA pump on my car, as my wipers are electric. I'm not sure if the vacuum part of the DA fuel pump drives anything other than the wiper motor. If your wiper motor is vacuum operated, then I believe you will need the DA pump.

Do you have windshield washers? If so they might be vacuum operated. Not sure how the heater water suply worked. In 53' it was vacuum controlled.

The heater unit in my 54 had been removed when I got it. I have to figure out how to reassemble it and get it working. I plan on installing windshield washer too.-just like you have. My fuel pump mounts on the side of the engine down by the fuel pump

Not sure how your engine heater valve works. The one on my flat head, uses the vacuum from the dual action pump.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Interestingly enough, my 54'-55' Mercury chassis parts book, only shows the dual action pump for 54'. And only lists dual action pumps for 54'.

Keep in mind that the 54 Ford and Merc fuel pumps are a one year only unit. Not until Ford went to the 2nd version of the 239 was the fuel pumps the same as the 272 and up.


If interested, I have a used 54 USA pump (dual action) that needs rebuilding and is for sale.
