Updated the mufflers on my pickup

Both of the ones on my truck had rusted out.
I used AP3743 mufflers from Amazon. About $29 each.
Similar design and a pretty good size match for the 7HC5230.
Prior owner somewhere along the line had cut open the
cases on the 7HC's, gutted the insides and rewelded.
(Not too bad, fairly quiet actually and a non problem
until about a month ago)
These new ones are really quiet at idle but you do get
some nice symphony cruising around town. I'm pleased.

Really good price for a stainless steel muffler, I have never liked the sound of my 221 in the woodie wagon. It is single exhaust, probably from napa. I just may have to try one of these. How would this one you bought compare to a glasspack?

TO ME, THERE IS NOTHING SWEETER THAN A GUTTED MUFFLER ON A FLATHEAD.

Woops. Excuse the shouting. Caps lock was on. Didn't want to re-type. LOL

Yes. I thought folks on here were on crack when I first heard
the gutted muffler stories.
The sound was acceptable and the sound level was ok as well.
I did not realize the mufflers that were on there prior were
empty inside, but they were on the way "south" from leaks.

Gutted one of these today. I'll do another one for the other side soon.
Turns out I don't really care for the sound characteristics it has with the
fully "muffled" mufflers.

No batting, just this deal with 1 7/8" tubing (with some under 1/4" holes perforating some of the tube surface area)
I had to beat up one end slightly to remove it due to spot welds holding it to the muffler case.

If you haven't done the other one you might try it with just 1 gutted. I had a 64 Tbird once, hard times couldn't afford new muffler. Found a cheap glass pac, it was stock muffler on one side and glass pac on left. The car sounded great.

Yeah, my OCD wouldn't let me do that.
And I'm sure the fuel trim might be "interesting" with divorced left and right sides and radically different back pressure.

Its straight pipes or glass packs for me on the flathead. I like that V8 sound. Single straight pipe on the 255 Merc and nobody has ever complained about the noise. At idle its very quiet. I run true duals and glass packs on a 403 Oldsmobile and the only time it might be considered loud is if my foot gets a little too heavy. Quiet in the drivers seat though.
