Battery Gauge Wiring:

I am trying to get the battery gauge on my 40 to work. All that is connected to it is the piece that comes down from the oil gauge. What else should be hooked up?I have a 6 volt altenator if that makes any difference.Does anyone have good wiring diagram?

I am not an expert electrical person but when I converted my 40 Ford from 6V to a 12 volt system , I rec'd help from Flat Ernie, a fellow HAMBER. To make my BATT gauge work I had to install a resistor in the line to reduce the incoming voltage to 6 V. Also, I had to isolate the BATT gauge by itself so that it was being fed separately by 6 volts. This isolation was achieved by removing the strap between the BATT and OIL gauge. Then I ran a wire from the TEMP gauge to the OIL gauge so as to again provide electricity to the OIL gauge. I don't think you will have to use a resistor since your alternator is putting out 6V, not 12V. But, I do think you will have to isolate your BATT gauge so it operates as a separate gauge all by itself. ELECTRICITY IS NOT MY SPECIALITY, so check out this idea with an expert. It is also a good idea to set up a fuse block under your dash so as not to have so many wires attached directly to your ignition switch. In the sketch the yellow wire is drawn over with a black marker to make it show up better. Click on photo to enlarge.

I'd have to see what you've got to help. I think you should be OK with a 6V alternator and not require the isolated circuit like 19Fordy did on his - his was required because of the CVR & 12V conversion....

Thanks Ernie for the clarification. I really don't want to mislead anyone.
