Accelerator Travel

As I continue to sort out my 40 Sedan Delivery... I am now trying to address a problem with the accelerator linkage. My pedal isn't far off the floor and I have very little travel on the accelerator-to-carb rod. As a result I can't get the throttle to rotate very much. A local flathead guy looked at it and commented that the rod was too long. But I am only seeing one rod part that everyone lists for 39 to 48. The rod presently installed is 11 inches overall and 9.25 inches between the ends. Dennis Carpenter lists the length of the rod as 10.44 inches. It doesn't say where the measurement is taken however.

With more travel, I might also get some interference between the firewall gas pedal linkage and the oil line coming off the back of the block. I'll worry about that when I figure out how to increase the travel.

Questions:

1. How long should the accelerator-to-carb rod be and where should the measurement be taken?
2. How do you remove the rod?
3. Any other place or area of adjustment to consider?
4. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Just noticed that Dennis Carpenter sells a shorter gas pedal rod for 35-38. Is it possible to install the shorter pedal rod on a 40? I'll try to measure this tomorrow.

Re: Accelerator Travel - Any help?

Hoping to hear from someone who can give me the benefit of their wisdom here. Checking this some more... I am guessing that my problem is the pedal rod. Parts guys are now substituting the 48-9727 for the 11A-9727. The substitute is almost 3/4 inch shorter. Does anyone know where I can get the correct rod or perhaps have a spare that they can sell me? Dennis Carpenter shows the correct one in the printed catalog but indicates that they are in short supply. They are not shown online.

I mentioned that the linkage is up against my oil line. Here's a picture. I'm going to try to deal with both problems at the same time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jim

did the delivery originally come with a column shift? If you are skilled w/welder

you may be able to take 3/4" out yourself or try local welding shop...maybe someone on the forum has the shorter rod...theyre should be one hole in your fire-wall for the fuel hard line where it becomes level with the top of your engine...check the part number on the accelerator linkage that is correct for pickup...just some ideas hope this helps......regards gump

That is a gas line your hitting NOT an oil line. Ive never heard of this problem. Maybe the arm got bent somewhere along the line. ???? ken ct.

Ken, It looks to me like the gas pedal linkage is hitting the oil line that comes out of the block. It's down lower in the photo.

If things are hitting you need to use your ingenuity to carefully move, bend or otherwise modify stuff so they don't hit!
Once you have full pedal travel available at the pedal, you can then look at the other end to see what length of rod you need. If you have a rod that is too long you could put a kink in it to effectively shorten it.

Mart.

It's definitely the oil line that it's up against. I'm considering a couple possibilities in regards to re-routing the tube. But for now, I'm trying to get the gas pedal up into a more natural position. Hard to tell from the attached picture, but the pedal is less than an inch from the floor. Not sure if the rod to the carb is actually right or wrong. But I suspect the pedal rod is really my problem.

Hoping to connect with someone on the Barn who might have one laying around.

These are photos of my 8BA in my 40 Ford using stock trans. and accelerator linkage. Perhaps you could do something similiar to provide more clearance. Photos taken without gas pedal being pressed downward..

The distance from the top of my 1940 Ford car gas pedal to the floor mat when measured along the accelerator pedal shaft is 4 in. Your distance does appear too small.

Thanks for taking the pictures. They confirm what I was thinking that an angled fitting might be the best way around this. Went over to a friends house and compared it to a bone stock 40 with the original linkage. A couple interesting observations... I thought that my pedal rod might be short, however mine sticks through the firewall about an inch. On the stock 40, you can just about see just the end peek through.

I also measured his original firewall to carburetor rod. Its perhaps a quarter inch shorter than mine. It really looks like the linkage running across the firewall is not properly shaped. While it is laying up against the oil line and that does have to moved, I still need to get this pedal up off the floor.

To get that pedal up off the floor you could remove it , cut it and weld in a piece to make it longer. Practice first with a scrap piece of metal to make sure making it longer will solve your problem.
