Oil Leak

I have a bad oil leak that seems to be coming from the bottom of the ****** and also drips off where the wishbone connects
i dont know what caused this but i hear it might be a missing or a tube that drains back into the pan thats fallen off
looking for help on how to repair this leak

after a drive i can get a 6" diameter circle of oil under the car
looking for the expertise of the board

There are three posts that always seem to occur. Rear main leaks, Timing, and carbureators.

Have you pulled the oil pan? If you haven't it's the only way to tell if the drain pipe from the rear main cap is gone. Follow this link to a great article on rear main leaks.

Thank You very much for the reply,, and the link to diagnose rear main leaks
soon as i read the part about the filler tube cap i remembered i changed mine a while back because it rattled
so just now i went out to check the cap on the car,, no tabs and it seated all the way down
its back to the old one and i'll let you know tomorrow if it stops the leak

after replacing my oil tube filler cap,,, i still had the leak
in fact,, it was a good stream of oil running out of the cotter pin hole in the flywheel housing ( I THINK )
any how,,, i dropped the pan today to take a look
found the drain tube had snapped off.. but somehow i dont think where it drains would cause that much of a leak
i strained all the used oil and found nothing .. not even grit
the engine runs very strong with lots of power

my question,,,
could that little drain tube cause my leak
 
Yes, the tube is meant to return rear main oil to the pan. It sticks down below the oil level to prevent crankcase pressure from pushing against the returning oil. The good part is that the rear main cap can be removed, if necessary, to repair the tube. Another cause could be simply putting to much oil back in the engine after an oil change. Even replacement dipsticks that are incorrectly marked or not completely seated in the hole can convince you to add oil.

Remember when you put the oil in that there is already three pints of oil in the valve chamber left from the previous fill.

Unlikely, because the oil slinger, and the chamber that it resides in and is drained by the tube, is behind the rear main babbit. If I am seeing your picture correctly that part of the babbit is for the crankshaft thrust.

Cracked babbitt in the rear main can definitely cause a leak. Yours looks like a groove made to drain the oil back into the pan, old timers fix and some rebuilders do it because they don't know how to pour and bore mains.:eek:

when i get my new gasket,,, i will keep you posted
im hoping the change to the proper filler cap and installing the drain tube reduces the leak to a drip
 
Got my oil pan gasket set today and i'm trying to figure out where the second narrow piece cork goes
I know one seals the rear main end
but i will need some help to figure the other
one is about 1 inch shorter
Any help is appreciated

1 piece is NOT used. Just use the one that fits and save the other for a rainy day.:) When it rains, I have no idea what you will do with the spare piece.:confused:
 
One gasket is for the early rear main, and one for the later main, I forget which is which. I think the wider one is for the later main. They are both to long, have to be trimmed to fit. You want it a touch short, so the pan rail gasket fits into the rear main gasket groove. Soak the one you use in water in a cup to put a curved set to it. Makes it a lot easier to install.

The early gasket is the shorter one because the cap is shorter.
