Another fan Question!!!

Hello Everybody it has been a long time since my last post but of course I have another problem. I had got the 29 Tudor out the other day for some driving and heard a noise that I had never heard before? I tracked it down and it was the fan, now I have heard all the horror story's about the fans breaking and sure enough my fan was wobbling on the water pump shaft so time to replace. I have a 4 blade old fan on it that was what was on it when I got it with a water pump that I have never replaced pumped ok so I did not replace it. I bought a alum. 2 blade fan and a leakless water pump today I just didn't know if that is the fan I need? 2 blade, 4 blade. or 6 blade plastic? As I said I went for the 2 blade is this what most folks are running for a more correct looking fan blade? If I need to go with something else let me know and I can trade it out for a different one. Well getting ready to tackle it in the morning wish me luck looks like I have to take the whole front end off just to replace the fan!! Also I am running an alternator how tight does the fan belt need to be? Well thanks again in advance Robert DeBord

The two blade was the correct choice. Remove the whole front end? I have been lucky at just unhooking my radiator support rods and tipping the radiator forward enough for the water pump body to clear the head studs. But that was with a two blade fan. The four blade might be another story. The fan belt has to be tight enough to keep from slipping on any of the three pulleys and no tighter. I have also used a V belt dressing on my V belt to give it more stick to the pullys.

I removed the light bar to get the four blade fan out out.

Try removing the Radiator Support Rods and tipping the radiator as far forward as it will go. Also you can loosen the Headlight Crossbar bolts (do not remove them or you are in for a fight to replace them) and the Bar and Radiator will tip a little further out. Place a large piece of cardboard against the radiator to help prevent denting or damaging the Radiator Fins with the tips of the Fan Blade or nose of the Water Pump. Getting he old four blade fan out is the wooly buger. If you turn the new two blade horizontal it will go in easier.

Robert,
Here in Fresno Ca, really gets HOT, our club guys love the 6 blade plastic fan for efficient cooling, and never a failure!!
Also, they are not so DANGEROUS if you happen to get your elbow into it while toodling around the engine room.

First off, smart move! Regarding the blades, the car was originally built with a two blade and a therostat is still necessary to get the motor up to a good temperature. If you need to go to something "else" it may be a radiator shop. Here is the main arguement against the four blade. It will not come out in the space required to remove the two blade. I usually remove the light bar and when putting it back I use extra long carriage bolts to pull things together for the stock bolts. Only make the belt as tight as is necessary to turn a charge.

looks like it is too late to help! I had the same problem with a customer car recently, cracks in the old 4 blade fan. I just cut one of the blades off with a friction blade and removed the pump as if it were a 2 blade. Lots quicker than pulling the front end off and the old fan was scrap anyway.

When I remove a 4 blade fan I just bend the blades back towards the fire wall and slip the water pump right off. Then trash the 4 blade fan.

Hey Guys,

I got the old fan off I thought about it a while and just bent two of the blades back because it was trashed anyway but it came off very easy after bending the blades back and installed the new water pump and 2 blade fan worked out very good. It seems to cool good to me with a temperature gun the top hose is right at 165 degrees and bottom hose is around 125-135 degrees so that sound good to me! I changed oil and done a good greasing and inspection of all lug nuts and other important bolts that should be checked on a regular time frame especially on my first drive of the year!(been busy with work!) and naturally it give me some problems as I went down the road...seemed to be missing and back firing through the carburetor when I got it back to the house as I didn't go far and pulled in to the garage gas was pouring out of the carburetor so maybe the float in the Zenith is stuck? I pecked on it lightly and it seemed to stop but I didn't get to take it out for another spin to see if it run better, going to check the timing and points to make sure they are right but it seemed to be to much gas in carb and was just flooding it out but that is what I like about the Model A even I CAN WORK ON IT!!! By the way changed the fan just in time 4 of the rivets holding it on 3 of them were missing! I was very lucky it didn't fly off and do a lot of damage. I would hate for people see a grown man cry!!! Well thanks for the help everybody Robert DeBord
