Window frame tar?

I'm not sure what this piece is called. It is the upper window frame for the door and rear side window glass on a 2 door hardtop. At any rate, it was installed with a bead of tar at the factory. What did those of you that have removed and reinstalled this piece use as a sealant? I bead of caulk? Maybe a bead of silicon? Does it matter?

The window frames (is this what you are referring to?) originally had rubber pieces that held the frame to the glass. On yours, the rubber must have turned to goop so it looks like tar.

It may have used glass setting tape instead of a rubber piece. to do the same thing (or was changed to to the tape sometime in the past). The tape may be found at a shop that does auto glass work.

No, the rubber seal was still there. This piece is for the side windows. This is the same as my parts car Victoria. The tar is between this piece and the roof and was squashed when the mounting screws were tightened. I'll get a picture later today of the side of the parts car for reference.

Old fashion stuff they still make, and lasts forever. My box is over at my buddy’s garage since we did a winter project of windows on both our cars. I’ve used it around the house too.

I hope it lasts. There is 60 ft of it in the smallest box I could find. I only need 10.

That 3M calk strip is,/and can be used for many purposes. It used to come in Black and was also available in a light gray color. I have both in my shop

It will last, just keep the lid on box closed to keep dust out. I'm still using out of a box I bought 30 odd years ago.
