1968 mustange302 V8 - harmonic balancer help

I am installing a numbered timing tape on my harmonic balancer.

I need to know the diameter of the harmonic balancer.

Sorry guys but I am too lazy to try to fight to get a tape measure
in there. :(

You try wrapping a tape measure around it or across it.
If it was that simple I would not be asking the question.
I was hoping someone had a harmonic balancer in hand or on an engine on a stand.

Maybe a large caliper or a piece of string will work.

Getting a little snippy ain't we?

How in the world can someone give you a measurement off of there's when no one here has any idea of how your engine was assembled? Have asked repeatedly and no answer.

Why a tape if you have no idea if the balancer is indexed correctly?

... stand in a bread line and ask for toast ...

Fordor - to answer your question.

As I stated I want to attach a "timing tape" to the harmonic balancer. These come on a card with @ 8 different timing tapes depending on the diameter of your harmonic balancer.

To index them to TDC, the tape you use has to be correct for the diameter of your harmonic balancer.

I was hoping someone had a harmonic balancer in hand or accessible to give me the diameter.

Apologies to all for being snippy.

This is the problem. The engine has not been identified. It may even be an EXPORT ENGINE.

The ONLY way to determine the diameter is to wrap a sewing tape around it. You should be able to get to it from underneath the car.

There was no 1968 302HP or HO. FORD screwed up that year. CHEV and AMC got ahead of them. The only thing they had was the 302 TUNNEL PORT and they would not stay together. They were not released for street.

You're apparently assuming all 302 harmonic balancers are the same. Without knowing exactly which version you have, or if it's even original 50+ years later, the best way to find out is measure the one you have.

Depending on which type of balancer it is, the TDC marks may no longer be correct and that should be confirmed before the new tape is installed.

Diameter and circumference are not the same thing. ;)

Thanks dmsfrr .....
Interesting that 1968 302 V8 balancers could be different. My engine is totally original.

For my purposes, diameter and circumference are the same. You know one, you know the other.

If you cannot measure it, you will find it very difficult to install the tape. If it's original, it will have the marks found buy simple cleaning. But still needs to be checked with tdc tool. dampener needs to be very clean for the tape to stick.

Right on 5851A. You grasped the problem
A friend today thought out side the box. Since getting a tape measure around the balancer is impossible - and - since we can see 2 of the 4 marks on the balancer. We taped a short string to the exposed balancer and marked the string length between those two marks.
Multiply by 4 and divide by pi and Arthur's you auntie.
We now know the balancer is 6.375" and lo and behold the card with 8 different tapes on it has one that is coincidently :) marked exactly for a 6.375" balancer.
Voila. Solved :) :)
