Rebuilt 226 No oil pressure

Hi all,
I am in the process of getting ready to start my 226 I finished a rebuild on. I turned the engine over with the starter but am not building oil pressure, even after 30 sec or so. I pulled the plate off my oil pump and there is oil in there but no signs of it in my mechanical gauge (clear tubing). Any thoughts? I have all my ports plugged so am scratching my head here. Do you need to prime these oil systems in advance to build pressure?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam, Can we assume no pressure reading at all? I don't think you'd see much oil in a clear tube as the gauge is a dead ended affair. Yes, many here prime the pump with a drill or something else. Others pack the pump with something thick like stp or assembly lube. I just crank with the starter like you did and it comes up before long. I have an H six also. Cant remember if there is a slot when you pull out the distributor, but if there is, take a drill and chuck a flat screwdriver in it and pump away. Good Luck!

Never tried one of those engines but some later pumps on newer engines needed packed with Vaseline to pull the oil and don't leave oil pan and filter to drain overnight. Seemed to be the gear type pumps and not the gearotor types. Hopes that helps, others will comment

I've never done much with the 6's, but with the v8's I have a long funnel made from a horn trumpet thats threaded so I can screw it into the oil sender boss, then dump the last two quarts of oil in there. It drains slowly and sorta fills at least some of the oil galleys and dribbles to the pump also. With spark plugs out it usually only spins over a few times and I've got oil pressure. good luck.
