zephyr gears worth the trouble

I have LZ gears in my 32 highboy.
No fenders, no top. brookville body It's a pretty light car
Early 32 rear with 3 78 gear set.
I also have a 32 Tudor with a 56 Chevy 265 mild cam 3 97s dual exhaust Mallory dizzy
39 trans with LZ gears. late 32 rear with 4 11 gear set
My racing days are a fond memory. I put the LZ gears in because I had them .
On both cars I have to slip the clutch some to get the cars moving in 1st gear.
They wind out very nicely so it's fun to hold 1st and 2nd a little longer.
In general, it's a little annoying at times to always baby the clutch.
I wouldn't install them if I had to do it over.

Hi Phil,

I'm surprised you have to slip the clutch especially in your 32. I have 29T main and 25T LZ in my 39 transmission in my full fendered 32 and don't have that problem at all. In fact I can leave it in Columbia overdrive and also don't have to slip the clutch to get going in first. My rear tires are 29.3" in height.

I'm completely happy with my setup and would do it again.

I just put a set in my roadster. I can’t wait to drive it. I will be sure to brag to that I have them. They are supposed to work well in a light car. I’ll try to dig up this thread and let you know. I’m learning too. Hopefully not the hard way
If anyone knows if an 11” clutch will work better than a 10” please let me know

The only thing an 11" clutch does better than a 10" is build up your left leg muscles!! Do not use!

****. I just torqued the flywheel bolts on the 11” flywheel. I have a 9”and a 10” clutch kit here lol

If the LZ gears need more clutch slippage will a smaller disc be better? I guess that was my original question

The amount of clutch feathering will depend on car weight, tire size, cubic inches of the engine and your amount of desire to get from point A to point B.

The smaller 10" diameter clutch will help with rpms, which is good in a light car. The only car I have with an 11" in my 40 with a 331 cad in it. The pedal is a lot stiffer, but I couldn't put a smaller clutch on the cad flywheel.

Ok I just drove the car after a lot of stripped bolt holes and f$cking around with different flywheels and clutches.
So far I’ve driven the car about 10 miles and I like the LZ gears a lot. I definitely had to slip the clutch in first. There was a noticeable difference in first gear and second gear is awesome. Way more fun to drive. I snapped bolts in my 11” clutch flywheel and wound up with a 9”. I’ll bet slipping the clutch with an 11” will be way better. I’m just happy to have it driving in time to go to trog22. I’ll comment again after driving it a while. So far I love the LZ gears
