Edelbrock Slingshot

Sounds like the Edelbrock Slingshot is a great manifold. I like the old stuff but I'm not stuck on it. If good repops are available I'm on it.

The Edelbrock repop slingshot has a big "Made in USA" badge on the snout which is obviously not period correct.

What's under that badge? Is there a bump? What does it take to make the new Edelbrock slingshot look like a classic?

The casting isn't quite the same as the originals (not as refined - a bit bulkier) . . . but there aren't many of the originals around anyway. It is a great manifold, and you should be able to remove the badge. You could also "shape" it a bit more with a high-speed air tool to mimic an original and then have it polished . . . would be much harder to tell it from an original at that point.

I have a repop. Once it's on, generator mounted, wire looms attached it is very difficult to see the differences.

Under the badge, is a mounting bump. Badge comes right off.

I was hung up on finding an original, but already had the repop. I drilled the repop to potentially install a PVC valve later on down the road. I would not do that with an original.

Eventually I'll find an original. I do not believe the old tale of only 100 made. For a time, they were popping up for sale every other day on Instagram.

I can say the manifold works extremely well.

I don't believe the '100 made' story either . . . not the one that says only a couple hundred sets of Ardun heads were ever made. Our HotRod world is FULL of ole' Wive's Tales. LOL

A vintage Edelbrock Super will work much better than a "slingshot".
More power, more mileage, more "cool" factor.
Use 48's, NOT 97's.

I have one on the wall. I made some 2" risers to match the carb base. Maybe I'll experiment with that one next year.

Pete,
Can you please expand on this. I am learning here and would like to know why you prefer the 48's instead of the 97's on the Edelbrock Super.

thank you
Patrick

They have a larger venturi so they flow more so they make more hp when you need it. They will not hurt mileage at street driving speeds. They look identical to 97's.

Pete,

Does your comment about "Supers" apply to them in general, or just to the Edelbrock? I ask because I have an Offenhauser as well as a Navarro "Universal" (Super with exhaust heat.) I plan on using the Navarro because the Navarro triple won the "Hot Rod" magazine comparison.

I don't think you will notice much difference between any of them for street use. A definite difference between 2 and 3 carbs though.

"48"'s are getting hard to find. How about a couple of the new "Big" 97's or a set of 2110 Holley's?

This is on a 258" engine with a MAX-1 and a set of Edmunds heads. I like the look of two carbs on a "Super" better than three carburetors.

Hi tubman; I believe Roger Huntington wrote in one of his books that the supers, in general, performed better due to the carb location as opposed to the duals that kept the generator location at the front of the manifold like the stock manifold, Craig.

Yes, a couple of "big" 97's might make a difference but they are costly compared to slightly scarce 48's.
On a small street engine, go cheap.

Remember, you are monkeying with miniscule hp so BIG changes in parts make very small changes in output shaft torque....LOL

Under it is a leprechaun pot of gold.
The pot of gold was the deciding factor for me. I ordered a new one from Summit Racing.

Like many suppliers, they're behind on shipping some products. This caused some rumors about them going out of business. The real story is that they closed their headquarters in Torrance, CA and moved it to Olive Branch, Mississippi, a Memphis, Tennessee suburb. They also relocated manufacturing out of Torrance to other locations.

The ribbon cutting was Friday June 10, 2022 according to the DeSoto County News.

Edlebrock was sold to an investment group:
https://www.iopfund.com/ "Industrial Opportunity Partners" It is all about the brand
names they own. Brand loyalty and reputation are drivers for these equity companies.
Here is the Edlebrock value proposition: https://www.iopfund.com/edelbrock/
Read the four bullet points at the bottom of the page. went through this when Dana Corp went bankrupt in 2001. The division I worked for was sold off, slice and diced, tough times for many many employees. Thankfully I made it through several owners and went on to other things.

I like the Offy better than the Edelbrock for max power. The intake is higher by1" and has larger runners. The carb flanges can be bore for the 2GC carbs or the large Holleys Along with a small Altinator. I ran these on the Htdro engines. For streeet I'd consider the 1 2/19 Holleys with stock jetting. Remember aesthetics does not improve power or economy.
