'37 Temp gauge-where did the color go?

Has anyone had the color in the tempature gauge turn to a clear liquid? Where did the red go? I can still see the level at 160 degrees but I have to get down to eye level to the gauge. I was running without a fan the other day and it did boil over. Could that be the problem?

I have seen this before....it appears that the coloring agent in the liquid separates and sticks to the glass tube

Yes, the very thing happened to me, I took the bulb to an instrument technician and he replaced the fluid, and to top it off (excuse the pun) he charged like the Light Brigade.

You can buy new liquid from CG ford Parts or Drakes. They sell in a little bottle and it is very cheap. It is also a fairly easy process to drain out the old fluid and re fill it.

can you elaborate on the process for refilling the temp gauge? i thought it was a capalary tube that was sealed under special conditions.

The glass tube is open at the top. Be careful to NOT overfill the tube.
